Scientists expected a dynamic star-forming region of a nearby galaxy lower in heavier elements might be low on dust made from such materials, called metals. New data from @NASAWebb reveals the opposite as it finds the building blocks of potential planets! go.nasa.gov/3CFXiJo

I'm really looking forward to joining FTC policy chief Elizabeth Wilkins and Seth Harris this Friday afternoon to discuss the agency's proposed rule eliminating noncompete restrictions on workers. This is a very good rule-- and it's going to be attacked roundly!

Invasive forest pest insects and disease coming to North America via trade routes and affecting ecosystems and economies here have long been a concern, but there has been a parallel distinct lack of budget priority and resources (especially personnel) over the years.

This paper outlines the problem well (and discusses the potential use of environmental DNA as a monitoring tool!).

We're hiring a postdoc to study host-microbe interactions! Our integrative research program studies how the world's most common bacterial endosymbiont has become so successful. Much of it is to do with the bacteria's ability to make its host's sex lives all about them. If you think this sounds interesting, consider applying! For the last 9 years, Liam Quigley has kept track of every slice of pizza he's eaten in NYC and what he paid for them. "The biggest thing I have noticed is the decline in the amount of sauce put on slices." elkue.com/nyc-slice/

unfortunate that there doesn’t seem to be any info about quality or deliciousness! It’s strictly business.

Would you look at that? My first earned credits and CGPA ever!!! 🎉

in reply to Nathan Schneider

Hi, Nathan! I've read the Loomio proposal but I don't understand exactly what would change if the proposal is approved
in reply to GiacomoSansoni

@GiacomoSansoni Thanks for looking! I just added language to clarify: "To be clear, this is a "sense check" on our progress, not a formal policy proposal. The results of this are not binding, but just meant to guide our work."

Discovery Alert! 📣
@NASAWebb not only confirms a planet candidate found by @nasa’s TESS space telescope, it provides new science, determining the planet is rocky. We also get preliminary atmospheric info. Good science and *excellent* teamwork! go.nasa.gov/3XfmOgi
#NASAExoplanets

LHS 475 b is relatively close, at only 41 light-years away, in the constellation Octans. We don’t yet know *if* it has an atmosphere, but @NASAWebb was already able to rule out a thick atmosphere. The telescope will study this planet this summer to tell us more!

Why is sea level rising?

Global sea levels are rising as a result of human-caused global warming, with recent rates being unprecedented over the past 2,500-plus years. @NASAJPL’s Ben Hamlington explains how our warming planet is causing sea level rise. sealevel.nasa.gov/understandin…

Stars across the spectrum! ⭐

These two views of NGC 346 show a dynamic, massive star-forming region in the Small Magellanic Cloud, which is a satellite galaxy to our own Milky Way.

What's going on in NGC 346?
#Hubble

In an image released today at #AAS241, @NASAWebb's near-infrared sensitivity detected dust in disks of material surrounding forming stars – which means that this region might contain the building blocks for not just stars, but planets as well! go.nasa.gov/3QAOVVe

The Hubble view (above on the left) shows NGC 346 in visible and near-infrared light. Outflows and radiation from young stars are wearing away at the denser outer portions of the region!

A whole new world!

41 light-years away is the small, rocky planet LHS 475 b. At 99% of Earth’s diameter, it’s almost exactly the same size as our home world. This marks the first time researchers have used Webb to confirm an exoplanet. go.nasa.gov/3VY5WK1 #AAS241

Why is there a general downward slope to the starlight intensity line?

Been AWOL a few days. sorry!!

Working on a new oil painting … here’s a section of the background still in progress. Noooot finished yet. But I’m working on a more lighter summery style of line. And I’m happy with it so far. It’s a view of an ancient city from a vision I had.

Although Webb data definitively confirms that LHS 475 b is a small rocky world, the existence and composition of its atmosphere is still a mystery. Additional observations are scheduled this summer to find out more.

We should choose like a yearly day where everybody donates like 100€ or something to the projects we use.
Like a "FOSS donation day". So to make it like a tradition. That would probably motivate people to donate if enough people are doing it. Then on the day we can share which projects we have donated to. It would be fun to see what people are using 😊
