Come work with us! I have a PhD position available to help understand which mutations in the non-coding parts of coding transcripts have functional consequences in Stem Cells.

We will using genome wide mesaurement of the effect of variation in miRNA binding sites to address when vairation causes changes in regulation and when it doesn't.

Mixed wetlab, bioinformatics and statistics project.

Seeking applicants for #PhD projects on #genetics & #language:

1) Deciphering roles of rare genetic variants in developmental speech/language disorders. This project studies impacts of pathogenic gene disruptions by integrating data from clinical & speech/language profiles of affected patients with lab-based analyses in human neuronal models (e.g. brain organoids).

2) Mapping language-relevant genetic effects on brain variability using normative modelling. Here, we apply normative modelling to large-scale imaging & DNA data from the general population, to uncover heterogeneous effects of language-relevant genetic variants.

3) Genetic architecture of the human language network. In this project, we employ advanced neuroimaging techniques to map neural circuits involved in language processing, characterize interindividual differences in their properties, & associate them with DNA variation in unique cohorts.

Applications due before Jan 8th 2024. More info here: https://www.mpi.nl/imprs-phd-fellowships-2024

Hey Mastodon! 👋 Here is our #introduction post: We are the Data Visualization Lab at Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University. You can find more about our work here: https://vis.khoury.northeastern.edu/

We'd love to be connected to more folks and labs in the realms of #DataVisualization #HCI #xAI #AR #VR #VisualAnalytics #PhD #Research

Our lab has been applying visualization to domain areas like #accessibility #UAVs #Genetics #Privacy #Pedagogy #Networks #GraphTheory

Say hi!

Cool paper! Also glad we are moving towards Patescibacteria and not CPR:

As a researcher investigating #language and #genetics, this cartoon really speaks to me.

Re-reading a excellent paper by @ariskatzourakis on Maverick/Polinton mobile elements:

Phylogenomics of the Maverick Virus-Like Mobile Genetic Elements of Vertebrates

Nicely underscores the emerging importance of large DNA transposons/EVEs in eukaryotic evolution

"We conclude that vertebrate Mavericks form an ancient lineage of aquatic dsDNA viruses which are probably still functional in some vertebrate lineages."

Nice review on the increasing importance of large #transposons :

Giant Transposons in Eukaryotes: Is Bigger Better?

https://academic.oup.com/gbe/article/11/3/906/5364020

"...the size limitations previously placed on mobilizable DNA units in eukaryotes may have been due in part to our inability to assemble large contiguous stretches of repetitive DNA in complex genomes."

I’m doing a project featuring little-known women of science as a part of my studies as a lab technician.
I’ll be drawing some portraits and illustrating the research and discoveries of some interesting scientists✨

Let’s start!

🧬Nettie Stevens. American geneticist who discovered chromosomes X/Y by studying Mealworms (Tenebrio molitor)

Reading up on the role of transposons in genome evolution, and finding this classic review from a few years ago very helpful:

We're hiring a postdoc to study host-microbe interactions! Our integrative research program studies how the world's most common bacterial endosymbiont has become so successful. Much of it is to do with the bacteria's ability to make its host's sex lives all about them. If you think this sounds interesting, consider applying! Details are here: https://shropshirelab.com/job/postdoctoral-scholar-of-host-microbe-interactions/.
