NYT’s opinion writer Paul Krugman is declaring #climate is now a culture war issue 🤔

I worked in the U.S. Senate ~20 years ago. Covered climate as a journalist. Cofounded an NGO focused on science policy issues during elections. Am finishing a dissertation on how Congress has made decisions about #science policy for the last 1/2 century - with climate as a central theme.

This isn’t new. #ClimateChange has *always* been a culture war issue.

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Ever talk to UNH’s Larry Hamilton? He’s done many surveys on science. Years ago, the 4-way split D-I-R-T was especially instructive:

The meme effect - sort of. How does a trickle become a stream become a river?

Scholars often hold an over-inflated myth about how quickly and easily our research can contribute to change.

Today when asked for a positive example of impactful research, I was reminded of @dynarski's 15 years of work to simplify government financial aid forms

That is helpful perspective, as I'm starting to feel deeply frustrated about progress on things I've been working on for about a decade.

Reminds me of Moyer's Movement Action Plan, where the critical pivot from resistance to change is getting through the "perception of failure" phase. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Movement…

Congratulations @dynarski!

in reply to Nathan Schneider

@ntnsndr I'm glad it's helpful context-setting!

One reason we get an over-inflated sense of research impact is that science is often deployed by powerful people & institutions to support things they were going to do anyway.

The result? Large amounts of fanfare and money go toward people and projects that have had minimal impact on the ultimate outcome.

Climate Change Is Death by a Thousand Cuts, "with numerous smaller impacts occurring simultaneously or in close succession. Each impact on its own might be manageable, but collectively they could sum up to a significant problem." kottke.org/23/08/climate-chang…

we call it the climate catastrophe or climate crisis now to emphasize that this is not just a „change“.

"A representation of the Egyptian Goddess Neith as a woman with an emblem of a shield with crossing arrows over her head, holding an Ankh and the Was scepter as she was depicted in The Tomb of Nefertari, 1255 BCE. This image contains some artistic liberties so that Wikipedia readers can tell her apart from the rest of the Egyptian Deities."

You can make posts appear on your Mastodon account at specific times using the post scheduling feature.

Scheduling isn't in the official apps or web interface, but it is available through third party apps such as Tusky and Fedilab, and through third party websites like plan.fedilab.app and buffer.com/mastodon

The feature is built into Mastodon, but for some unknown reason there's no official interface for it yet. That's why it is only available through third parties.
