This map shows the 50 countries in the world where you can (mostly) drink the tap water. But: “Fewer than one billion people have a tap at home that issues potable water.” bigthink.com/strange-maps/drin…
in reply to kottke.org

This map really screwed up my brain today. I always knew there are many things I take for granted that are not a universal fact. But this? That’s a lot of the world.
in reply to kottke.org

When we visited China, we found public fountains labeled as safe for drinking at airports and other public spaces. Other than that, when we mentioned that in the US we drank water straight from the faucet, people were absolutely puzzled. Not awestruck, just confused. Like if we had told them that we cleaned our feet in the dishwasher.

We had to say goodbye to our sweet Happy. She was the very best girl & we had so many adventures together. Happy hiked mountains in Colorado, camped with us in Texas, ran across California’s beaches & pranced through the Michigan snow.

She named herself Happy & loved every person she ever met. We have always felt extremely lucky to find her on Congress Ave & came to call her our Austin terrier since she was a little bit of every breed. We will miss her every day. #dogsofmastodon

I’m so very sorry for your loss, Sheril – they leave such a large hole in our hearts when we have to say goodbye 💗
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

So sorry for your loss 😢
I hope you find some comfort in remembering all the joy you brought each other ❤️

This post reminded me that I wanted to try this game, and after watching some trailers and seeing the update history, I decided to buy the "family" 4 pack. I'm playing single player at the moment but I am very excited to gift the 3 copies to my friends and get a server fired up! It's a blast!

Sounds good, but the only Steam Family Sharing update I want to see is:

- No longer locking the ENTIRE library if a family member is playing a completely different game to what you want to play

That has always pissed me off about it.

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

sadly not gonna happen. Had to buy enough games twice for steam not to miss out on those profits 😔
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

I found that if someone is playing a game already with my shared steam library, I can play a game without booting them out

I laugh at this, but sometimes I also spend five minutes fumbling around and wondering why my SD card won't go in because I have it backwards.

A project I did for Halloween this year was these talking pumpkins, which were a hit with our trick-or-treaters!

I ended up spending more effort on creating an ugly paper mache rock to hide my projector than the actual pumpkin effects, which were pre-rendered videos I purchased.

When it gets bad is if anyone successfully applies to run a TLD for
.lan
.wan
.dmz
.intranet

Because I don't think any of them have ever been formally designated as reserved or special purpose TLDs.

"The Best Web Browser" Isn't Thorium #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/tR-dhc_SWBk
in reply to Random Tux User

@enthusiast101 I'm talking about a browser patch set where you would have to compile it, this would be a super niche project for sure
in reply to Brodie Robertson

Fair enough, I can see that. That said, I don't think the browser would last long if they went this route. Mainly because I doubt most people have time to compile a browser with external patches.

Though if Thorium implemented an update feature that pulls the source and auto complies it, that might be more acceptable. This method would likely require some amount of automated testing to ensure nothing went wrong.

🎃 Happy Halloween, or Spooky Halloween, not sure!🎃

I don't know anything about this program beyond its web page, but I think it's a clever idea, so I want to share it:

It lets you raise money for a charity through your #NaNoWriMo word count the way runners raise money for the number of miles they run.

This year's charity is We Need Diverse Books.
