Was very pleased to find this among all the other classics right at the front.

And there’s a brilliant opera, Der Meister und Margarita, music and libretto by York Höller that I saw in about 1990. Conducted by Pierre Boulez. A surreal evening!

One of the (many) good sides of teaching: you get plenty of time to delve into topics and develop your own material (and code).

I now want to share part of my materials as a #DataScience textbook online:
florian-huber.github.io/data_s

(work in progress)

All materials and source code is on #github: github.com/florian-huber/data_

And a pdf version can be found on #zenodo: zenodo.org/records/10074475

in reply to Frank Aylward

@foaylward installation of Python from the first-party installer works well for Windows and Mac.

I know that veteran programmers love environments, but this is just another confusing abstraction that students have to understand. Better to say "hey, if you want pandas, do `pip install pandas`" and it will just be there. I don't think the 3 conda steps starting at florian-huber.github.io/data_s
are going to make any student say "I love python"

in reply to Charles Tapley Hoyt

@cthoyt oh I see - yes I can see how that would work too. I teach a bioinformatics class on an HPC running Linux and so I've found conda is simplest. But I do have a full week of logging in/ conda initialization in the beginning to get everyone started.

Can you please provide source for that financial statements?

(I would like to compare that with Slovakia. Last time I've checked, one of the figures was to the tune of approx. 30M€ for three years.)

@kohelet How's it going? Well, we hope! Which method did you choose for your Nextcloud installation, out of curiosity??

When I was a child in the 80s, the night sky was filled with stars. And those stars inspired us to imagine other worlds & ask really big questions.

Decades later, the night sky looks like a much lonelier place. Light pollution is increasing & I fear we may lose the ability to be awed by looking up & recognizing our place in the universe.

I don’t know about others, but I sure miss the stars. Image: Luke Stackpoole via Unsplash

you seem to be really enjoying Cumbria specifically. If you don't mind a somewhat terrifying drive, look up Hardknott Pass. It's Britain's steepest road and has lots of insane corners, most notably a hairpin turn where if you come off of the road, you're not going to be getting back on to it again (I nearly died there myself the first time I drove it, in a clapped out Ford S-Max, pitch black and heavy rain!), but there's the remains of a roman Fort there which is a must-see!

Super powerful. In my ignorance, I am moved.

"We call for a ceasefire in Gaza, a solution for the safe return of the hostages in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners in Israel, and an end to Israel’s ongoing occupation. We also call on governments and civil society in the United States and across the West to stand up against the repression of support for Palestine.

And we refuse to allow such urgent, necessary demands to be suppressed in our names. When we say never again, we mean it."

I think a policy like that of the German Feed in Tariff for solar PV might work. Meaning, something that starts small and seems innocuous, but grows exponentially, and by the time it's obviously a threat it has built its own durable constituency. A head-on conflict from the very beginning seems... not great.
in reply to Zane Selvans

but we have to stop building a coop economy with just piecemeal interventions. We need to build infrastructure for creative futures, not just specific known problems.

*Slime mould appreciation post*

Slime moulds usually live as single celled organisms, but will occasionally perform an astonishing feat of cooperation - gathering together as a collective ‘organism’ to form structures such as fruiting bodies. They may resemble fungi, but are really a unique group of amoebozoa.

Today we drove to Bellevue, MI to witness the annual fall migration of thousands of Sandhill Cranes. Turn on your sound to listen to their calls, which can be heard up to 2.5 miles away.

These magnificent #birds nearly disappeared a century ago due to overhunting, but populations rebounded & are now stable in MI.

Sandhill Cranes are among the oldest living birds on Earth with a wingspan of up to 6 ft. Aldo Leopold described them as "nobility, won in the march of eons."

We get Sandhill Cranes all around where I live in Central Florida. They have no fear (as befitting a 4' tall pseudo-dinosaur) and their mating dances are absolutely wonderful to watch and hear. I believe they mate for life, and the usually-single child spends the first year with its parents. Seeing a triplet of Sandhill Cranes meandering down the middle of the road without a care in the world is a fantastic sight. I love these guys.
