I'm enjoying the combination of fediverse lag, celebration and exhortation as the EU crosses the line in a petition to ban conversion therapy. About 40% WE ARE SO CLOSE KEEP GOING, 40% WE DID IT, LET'S KEEP GOING and 20% SOME SIGNATURES ARE ALWAYS DISCOUNTED KEEP GOING, the whole thng is beautiful and amazing and inspiring and if you're in Europe just go put your name down.

If any Mastodon instances are having trouble with their costs growing out of control, ping me and see if I can help lower your bill.
Apparently a recently closed instance was paying $300/month for hosting which is insane to read considering how small of an instance it was. When we had 40k monthly users I was paying about $120/month so an instance with less than 400 total users (not MAU) should be super cheap to run even with a few TB of storage and bandwidth.
It hurts my heart to read instances closing down over costs and finding out theyโre paying more than instances 10x their size. ๐ข

Global health institutions allowed COVID-19 vaccinations to be locked up by patents. Moderna showed they could transfer their manufacturing methodologies to factories in places like South Africa. But those factories were forced to send doses to Europe and North America, while most Africans did not get COVID vaccinations.
There is a different model of medication manufacturing and distribution that is used with AUDS retrovirals for equitable distribution. It could have been used for COVID vaccines. But it wasnโt.And the same thing is now happening with Mpox.

I am honored to share that Iโve been nominated for an Emmy as host of PBSโs Serving Up Science - a series funded by the National Science Foundation.
This recognition is a testament to what federal science funding & public media can achieve when we invest in #science, education & evidence-based storytelling.
And itโs a reminder that curiosity matters & there is value in making science understandable & available to all.
If this resonates with you, I hope youโll support science agencies & PBS.

Today, the crown of "first time linux user" is for Linux Mint, followed closely by ZorinOS, VanillaOS, and Bazzite (because GAMING).
If I want to make fun of somebody, NixOS or Arch.

What is not possible for a newcomer are W-LAN printers that cannot be controlled after installation, programmes that still have to be compiled, etc.
