Linux Mint for me, what about you? 😃

Debian. I've been using it for years and it always just works. Sure the packages in stable can get a bit old towards the end of a release, but Flatpak and stable backports go a long way towards alleviating that. I'm running kernel 6.12 on Debian stable right now thanks to their official backports repo, 🙂

I've just gotten used to Raspberry Pi OS so much that I put it on my desktops and laptop, too.

It is mainly Debian in disguise.

I currently use Fedora Gnome, nobara KDE and Linux Mint on various devices. Everything runs very stable.
in reply to It's FOSS

it will be @devuan but i would have a bootable USB flash with #slackware somewhere 😀
in reply to It's FOSS

Depends on the device age and specs. Probably #Fedora on new, decent systems and #AlpineLinux on older, weak systems. In my tests, Gnome usually takes only around 1.1 GB on it!!!

I used Linux Mint for a good while and really liked it. Unfortunately I kept having annoying issues with Bitwig crashing and audio interface acting up constantly. Decided to give Ubuntu a go and was blown away how smoothly everything runs. It's a keeper.

Definitely Fedora. Don't get me wrong, I like other distros, too, but if I have to pick just one, that's a very easy answer for me.

i am a late linux user, and never go back to windows again. I only used mint and i am happy about it. I know there are more distros but is there a 'best distro'? Use that distro that you like most, but all good advices are welcome 🙂
in reply to It's FOSS

Yeah, Linux Mint Cinnamon.

I can do my work, because: It runs, runs and runs - no problems, no antics ...

In this scenario https://www.linuxfromscratch.org/

but since I won't be giving up my freedoms to pick and choose anytime soon.

Currently SteamOS, Bazzite, & a frankenUbuntu in order of usage.

I'm a Fedora user, but if I had to stick with one distribution, I would choose Arch Linux.
It is flexible enough and probably fit every possible usecase. Whether it is a stable Gnome desktop, or a couch gaming setup as a steam OS replacement.

Did a lot of distro hopping and got a home at opensuse now. Best balance between security and usability.
in reply to It's FOSS

Ubuntu. Because it's the only distro that updates its shit without bugging me for password every god damn time.
in reply to It's FOSS

Windows ME ! No, just kidding, pick up any major distro, I don't care as long as I'm running Linux "forever".

I’m really liking EndeavourOS. Arch (btw) but a little bit gentler. Forever’s a long time, but as long as I don’t break it, I can’t see myself going anywhere else. In other news, I’ll probably break it.

Whilst it's not been forever regarding how long I've been using #Linux, I've used #Debian for more than 10 years now, perhaps as many as 15.

So, my answer is simple. #Debian

I always prefer to run #Stable releases, so I am presently on #Bookworm and will in-line upgrade to #Trixie when 13.1 is released, just as I've done for perhaps the last 3 or 4 major releases.

in reply to It's FOSS

Arch because it provides the widest spectrum of options. Who knows what will be in the future?
in reply to It's FOSS

My own (XeroLinux). That way I know what's going on and how to fix.
in reply to It's FOSS

For sure.. I wonder why you don't cover it though it's been out for years.. Would be great if you do. Lemme know ;)
in reply to It's FOSS

Yeah but that's old AF, many things have changed since even philosophy maybe an updated post ? If you feel like it...
in reply to It's FOSS

This is a tricky one...

If we have all the distros, but we only can install one, I would keep with Gentoo, since its the one I'm using most and I really love the freedom of its configuration, despite sometimes you can end breaking it 😅

If we're talking about having just one distro for all of us, I would vote for Debian, since I think its widely used while still being accesible for new users.

5 years ago, it would have been Arch. Today, it would be OpenSuSE Tumbleweed. So many cool packages without the need to compile, and even then you can build the packages right on the website.

Disclaimer: I'm still not sure how to build packages for OpenSuSE.

in reply to It's FOSS

This answer would have changed for me over my Linux life (~16 years).

Today, I'm REAL HAPPY with Fedora Kinoite!

Ask me again next year.

in reply to It's FOSS

Void / Openbox.

Recently something broke though, bc they removed ffmpeg7. Their ffmpeg version numbering scheme is kind of borked anyway.

Also, if you run software you've (patched and) compiled yourself it might break any time you do a package upgrade, bc, being a rolling release, dependencies, meaning specific versions of shared libraries, might go away.

Otherwise, provided you know what you're doing, extremely pleasant, stable and easy to manage distro.

There's so many great distros but for now I can stick with Fedora. It just works.

Mint is rightly a popular choice as a replacement for W*nd*ws.

Choosing and configuring one that lasts and works in business and education as well as at home will need a huge amount of additional expertise and experience. Let's hope our European Union politicians and administrators will support the very new but belated EU OS initiative (or something similar) with the resources needed to develop an OS and information technology ecosystem that everyone accepts (not only in Europe), and that is independent from the current outdated monopolies that are holding everone back.

EndeavorOS for me. Although I'd consider installing it headless at first to get an unthemed Gnome/Plasma experience. I enjoy building simple themes from the ground up

It would have to be Arch. So much freedom to do what you want with your system, design it as you will etc.
