Here is my list - A cohesive and intuitive experience. Everything has its home. Minimal OS interaction when working within an application. Stability and predictability. Eye candy is fine if it advances usability (such as useful “widgets”)
I'm technical enough, but help family and friends with #Linux. I'm particular about graphical user experience.
- sane setup for non-technical users or of the box - easy access to printer setup, user setup, network setup, etc - timely security updates - ootb wide hardware support (including proprietary if chosen) - mainstream enough for packages (including proprietary ones) to be available. #flatpak #snap #appimage and #distrobox make this easier now
LONG TIME SUPPORT >5yrs , plus easy and stable/reliable way to do "inplace upgrade" , additional flatpack and appimage support out of the box. NO SNAPS!
Frequent updates on arch and only security & bug fixes in Debian. That's it and everything else is extra good stuff that comes with the distro. Which is why I use both of those distros.
Specifically? Eh, dunno. Always been a Debian fan. Stable, and leading edge updates aren't a killer need. KDE has more than enough customisation options for me.
good wayland support and sane defaults appeal to me - but the single thing I long for most in a distro, but lately am unable to find, is a working global menu.
A good package manager. I use Arch Linux (btw) and it’s really nice that software that is supported on linux most likely can be found either in the main repository or the aur. The other thing I like about Arch is that it just works, sure getting used to it at first can be daunting but after that initial change it’s not that difficult to use. The only time I’ve ever had Arch break from from my own stupidity instead of a random update breaking everything.
#Arch lets you start with a blank canvas to build a system that is specifically tailored for you. For me that is the best feature of all, the learning and the knowledge you acquire in the process is a close second. #archlinux
I like aesthetics, software shops, and out of the box support with my software. Might change from Zorin back to Pop OS because of this....Zorin has been a bit finicky trying to utilize Wine
