AFAIK TrueNAS CE et al, are not longer based on FreeBSD, but on Debian 12

please add @openwrt to the list. Its a life saver for low hardware which I curently use. Its not exactly NAS dedicated but to make it a NAS you just install some packages and voila. For my use SMB and SFTP is enough, but you got docker and python there so no problem with making some more advanced protocols and services.

In my usecase, everything on Proxmox & all services separate, OMV was too bloated.

A simple Debian container with Cockpit & the 45drives file sharing plugin was enough to setup SMB & some users.
