:raspberrypi: Raspberry Pi 5 is coming :raspberrypi:

With more than twice the speed of Raspberry Pi 4, and featuring our brand new RP1 chip, we’ve refined the Raspberry Pi experience.

It’s the everything computer. Optimised.

Priced at $60 for the 4GB variant, and $80 for its 8GB sibling, units are already available to pre-order from many of our Approved Resellers, and will ship at the end of October.

Me: I don’t need more rpi’s. I don’t need more…
RPi: Hey look, it’s the RPi 5
Me: …

SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY

Yikes 25 Watts! 🤯 Long gone are the days of the low power single board computer. 😬 Glad I didn't try to make a "future proof" UPS based on my assumptions of what a next gen Pi would need because I would have been way off!
in reply to Patrick Van Oosterwijck

@xorbit you can still user RPI 2/3/4 if you don't need the computing power of 5.

There's nothing wrong with that.

Announce the list of licenses that need to be purchased. Do one still need to pay for MPEG-2?

JK 😜

in reply to Raspberry Pi :raspberrypi:

hopefully you will still manufacture cheaper Pis? Because a big part of the appeal of the RPi is it's affordability, to be used in projects where power isn't even needed.
in reply to Raspberry Pi :raspberrypi:

what a surprise. I am really excited to get my one. Hopefully Flirc case will be ready for Pi5 soon.
in reply to Raspberry Pi :raspberrypi:

Any info on hardware-accelerated video codecs? av1 decoding? x265/av1 encoding?
in reply to Raspberry Pi :raspberrypi:

For the same price as one of these plus storage, power supply and peripherals, you can get a decent used laptop and actively avoid creating new E-waste. For most use cases of a single-board computer, an old laptop plus a microcontroller that runs circuitpython will do a better job.

Congratulations folks! So many new features! We could make an #AstroPi with two cameras on a single unit. But I'm wondering how the 16nm die would fare on board the ISS. Looks like quite a hefty chunk of metal on the top of the AP so that combined with a flight case itself might be enough. We would probably need to get one inside a chamber and bombard it to know.
in reply to Raspberry Pi :raspberrypi:

Kudos! I'll likely get one. I especially appreciate the much-faster MicroSD card slot speed.
in reply to Raspberry Pi :raspberrypi:

Hooray! Thanks Pi team 🙂
Is the USB-C port power only or can it run displays as well?

As usual @geerlingguy has everything covered that you'll need to know (including some things you won't 😁 ). Enjoy ..

in reply to Raspberry Pi :raspberrypi:

it's everything I could've ever wanted from the Raspberry Pi for use as a mini PC.
Will it still power on automatically, and does it use UEFI?
in reply to Raspberry Pi :raspberrypi:

Very exciting news! Hopefully by Xmas there will be M.2 andapter and passive cooling case(hopefully one that does not cover antennas and with feet to stand it up). Got PI1, PI2, missed on 3, PI4 is now my main workstation, had to save cash and 4gb version is a bit low on ram.. so saving for PI5 with 8gb(how do I get on hardware preview mailing list?😀 Will bookworm have raspbian in its name? Can’t wait to upgrade my workstation and looking forward to pico2! ❤
in reply to Raspberry Pi :raspberrypi:

Really happy to see this, particularly the ability to run two MIPI CSI-2 cameras off the board.
in reply to Raspberry Pi :raspberrypi:

You guys completely missed the opportunity to make a more Apple-esque introduction video on this, considering it's RPi designed silicon 😛

awesome! When is the 16GB version coming to a compute module form factory? Planning a new k8s cluster
in reply to Raspberry Pi :raspberrypi:

Can you explain the USB PD setup? You talk about needing 5v at 5A; but that's not legal USB PD is it?
in reply to Raspberry Pi :raspberrypi:

with the removal of the 4-pole jack, will there be any analog audio capability? Maybe some way to map it on a gpio pin?
in reply to Raspberry Pi :raspberrypi:

I've been saving and saving to be able to buy 2 x RPi4's...

:blobcataww: Now I'm gonna try for 2 x RPi5's.

So glad I saw this before I committed to buying RPi4. Nothing wrong with RPi4 mind you.

in reply to Raspberry Pi :raspberrypi:

what about a Compute Module 5, presumably that will also happen, but will it be compatible with CM4 boards?
in reply to Raspberry Pi :raspberrypi:

Awesome! Can't wait for the Raspberry Pi 500 keyboard computer. :blobaww:

@coltofox lmao $60, y'all have lost complete sight of what got you popular. I get that chips are pricey but like...lol.

$60 for this, or $60 for a Dell Micro of equivalent performance but doesn't require any addons to use M.2, hmm, decisions decisions.

in reply to Raspberry Pi :raspberrypi:

This is awesome! I am excited to tinker around with my first Pi. I just have a few questions.

1. Will the active cooler be compatible with the official case? I know the case has a fan of its own, but the active case seems to quite a bit more effective based on the footage.

2. When will an official starter pack akin to this (https://www.raspberrypi.com/products/raspberry-pi-4-desktop-kit/) be released? I'd like to put this on a list for the holidays, and I think it'd be easier for family to understand.

Delighted with @Raspberry_Pi 5 finally coming! 🥳

I'm not so happy seeing its rice tag at $80, and being unable to find it in any official reseller in the EU for less than €92 🙄
