I feel the need...the need for speed! 💨

The Douglas D-558-II "Skyrocket" was first flown #OTD in 1948. One of the early transonic research airplanes, the Skyrocket later became the first aircraft to fly 2x the speed of sound.

A few months after the USSR launched Sputnik, the US's first satellite, Explorer 1, was launched into space #OTD in 1958. Explorer 1 measured the radiation environment in Earth orbit, leading to the discovery of the Van Allen Belts.

From 1979 to Jan. 1983, 2 remotely piloted, experimental Highly Maneuverable Aircraft Technology (HiMAT) vehicles were used at what is now @NASAArmstrong, to develop high-performance fighter technologies.

Cheers erupted on Jan. 24, 2004 (Jan. 25 GMT) as the Opportunity rover successfully landed on Mars. Designed for a 90-day mission, little did we know that it was the beginning of a 14+ year expedition across 28 miles (45 km).

The uncrewed Apollo 5 mission was launched on the Saturn IB SA-204 rocket #OTD in 1968 with the primary objective of testing the Apollo Lunar Module's ascent and descent propulsion systems while in Earth's orbit.

NASA announced its 8th group of astronauts #OTD in 1978, including 15 Shuttle pilot and 20 mission-specialist candidates. The group, dubbed the "Thirty-Five New Guys" was the 1st to include minorities and the 1st new astronaut group since 1969.

A sample-return mission that led to big discoveries! ☄️

#OTD in 2006, the Stardust spacecraft returned samples of Comet Wild 2 to the Earth for study. Stardust, launched in 1999, was the first NASA mission dedicated to studying comets.

Stardust was also the first robotic mission to return a sample of extraterrestrial material from beyond lunar orbit. The returned sample yielded a scientific bonanza…

Scientists were intrigued by what the particles indicated about the origins of comet materials, and also found the amino acid glycine in the particles, a fundamental building block of life on Earth!

A very happy 80th #birthday to space flight legend Dr. Shannon Lucid! 🥳

Selected with the 1st class of @NASA_Astronauts to include women in 1978, Lucid flew to space 5 times and held the record for most time spent in space by an American and by a woman from 1996 to June 2007.
