For our LRV fans, visiting an LRV driven on the Moon is a bit difficult since the 3 LRVs used for Apollo 15, 16, and 17 missions were left on the Moon. But you can find an LRV used for training at @airandspace.

A bag of soup sounds good right now

@NASA_Astronauts have an array of menu items to stay well fed and hydrated on missions. The #Apollo17 menus had around 2500 calories allocated per day for each astronaut.

In 1972, #Apollo17 Mission Commander Eugene Cernan had 2 space flights under his belt, Gemini 9 in June 1966 and Apollo 10 in May 1969. Cernan was also a backup crew member of the Gemini 12, Apollo 7, and Apollo 14 missions.

#Apollo17 Command Module Pilot Ronald E. Evans was selected as a member of the 4th group of NASA astronauts in 1966. He was an electrical and aeronautical engineer, and @USNavy aviator before his assignment to the Apollo 17 crew.

Lunar Module Pilot Dr. Harrison (Jack) Schmitt joined NASA as a member of the first group of scientist-astronauts in 1965. Before NASA, Schmitt worked as a geologist at the @USGS Astrogeology Center. He was on the backup crew for Apollo 15 before being selected for #Apollo17.

Venus's surface is shrouded in mystery thanks to its ultra-thick atmosphere, but when the Pioneer Venus Orbiter reached orbit 44 years ago on Dec. 4, 1978, it sent back detailed data about the planet…for another 14 years!

Gemini VII astronauts Jim Lovell and Frank Borman launched to Earth orbit #OTD in 1965 for a 14-day endurance mission to see how humans could handle extended periods in space and perform a rendezvous with another craft.

#OTD in 1969, President Nixon announced that Neil Armstrong would serve as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the @PeaceCorps, a role Armstrong would serve from 1971–1973.

#OTD in 1957, space capsules got their shape! NASA engineer Max Faget proposed a blunt conical shape for Earth re-entry based on Harvey Allen's research. The Mercury capsule, shown below during a wind tunnel test, was NASA's 1st crewed spacecraft to use this design!

Before he was an astronaut, Neil Armstrong was a @nasa test pilot, testing research planes including the X-15. Milt Thompson called him "the most technically capable of the early X-15 pilots." On the last of his 7 X-15 flights in July 1962 he reached Mach 5.74.
