I just finished reading Emily St John Mandel's book Sea of Tranquility.
This is the first time I have read this author. I am so pleased she made the New York Times bestselling list. It means that people who can actually write well turn up on that list upon occasion.
This book has to do with a collection of characters from throughout time who are all connected through a strange glitch in reality that a department of time travel is investigating. We also soon learn that they are connected through various waves of disease as well which affect them in ways that are both similar and distinct.
St John Mandel knows how to paint a scene and flesh out her world. Her portrayals of time and place make this as much a historical novel as a science fiction drama.
