Any takers?

Every so often I check back in on the multi window protocol and everytime Matthias has to jump through more hoops to appease the Wayland protocol devs to avoid a global coordinates system we've now achieved meta windows that apps can position themselves in gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland…
in reply to Brodie Robertson

to be fair, what are compositors like stardust supposed to do when there just isn't a global coordinates system?

i mean, i get scrolling compositors aren't popular and i can't find any active ones but stardust at least is active and has a genuine use-case for non-objective coordinate systems given wayland doesn't know what a z axis is

in reply to Nova🐧✨

@technobaboo That's a really weird case because normal apps are simply never going to work in a way that makes sense in that environment, things would need to be modified specifically for that style of system
in reply to Brodie Robertson

i don't think they'd need to, if windows can be placed relative to others then that's very directly translatable to 3D space!
in reply to Nova🐧✨

@technobaboo It's translatable but it'll never be as good as apps designed for a 3D environment, it'll just get them working
in reply to Brodie Robertson

technically yea, but you can get 99% of the way there and even make some 2D apps work better in 3D than 2D given the right translation
in reply to Nova🐧✨

@technobaboo Here's a question, couldn't a 3D compositor just use the coordinates given not as the literal position but as a spacing difference between the windows of the app
in reply to Brodie Robertson

yes, but given you have infinite space and the virtual monitor clips to the side, how can you make sure the windows always have room to put windows to the side?
in reply to Brodie Robertson

I really don't want to see a global coordinate system, unless all compositors allow turning self-positioning windows off.

With Wayland, apps are finally appearing on the correct (active) monitor, whereas with X lots of apps and all the windows they create just open on the leftmost monitor (coordinates 0,0), even though my primary and active monitor is to the right of it.

Thanks to e. g. KWin rules, users (but not apps) can still place individual windows on specific screens.

I just finished this painting. I am entitling it: Frog in a Turner Storm
Today is a fittingly stormy day for it!
I got all excited about painting something on a rather large round canvas. So I pulled out a detail image of just the frog.

Since I love any chance talk about reducing #food waste (which wastes energy, water + contributes to #ClimateChange) I made this PBS short on why we needn't be so quick to toss out those brown bananas 🍌

youtube.com/shorts/hhdwHYElIRk

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

As someone that likes them just a hair before they are ripe, I find brown disgusting to eat.. unless they are used in banana bread!
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Spouse will only eat unripe (bright yellow, unspotted) bananas.

I wait until they're about 30% spots, but at that point they only have a couple of days before they become bread, or even better, muffins.

When a company pledges to ‘plant a tree,’ tell them you prefer they help ‘protect a forest.’
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Protecting forests is great, but one greenwashing strategy is to sell the protection of the same forest over and over again. I don’t know how we distinguish that from real protection efforts.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

YES!! 🌲🌲Take care of the trees and forests we already have.
