That's cool! In addition (not instead of the reddit sub), have you thought about opening a sub on one of the federated reddit alternatives like piefed?

@QuadRadical Yeah! Or Lemmy, Kbin.

It's easy to cross-post from Mastodon, you just ping a community like this: @community_name@server_name, and the message will appear as post. All comments from the post will also appear here. So convenient!

@Shatur @QuadRadical not currently considering most instances likely fall completely afoul of the new UK laws, the whole reason my Forum is shut, i think a lot of the Fediverse is about to get a wake up call about the Online Safety Act

Scientifically cool discovery, but kind of a bummer ...

You know how Europa, the moon of Jupiter, has an icy shell that covers a *huge* amount of water -- 2X that of Earth?

it was always a very exciting candidate for "another place in our solar system where life might have emerged"

The problem is, new estimates suggest the upper ice layer is 21 miles thick -- that's 4X the height of Mount Everest

*quite* a barrier to studying the water below

@ntnsndr I'm reading Governable Spaces right now, and I'm wondering... where/if at all you see implicit feudalism crossing the line into explicit feudalism.

On one side, there's platforms like Reddit that are using protocological control to suppress dissent (arstechnica.com/tech-policy/20โ€ฆ) and Discord that hides behind language of "servers" to mask a reality of control (something like 40,000 pre-emptive bans per year) who I don't think would call themselves feudal, but who take (explicit) action beyond the (implicit) design of their systems.

On the other, there's the examples you gave of people who call themselves "benevolent dictators" who actively wear the title even while acting more "justly" than the title may convey.

I have a lot of other thoughts on this that are backing up this question, but I'll just start with that to stick to the micro-blogging format for now lol.

in reply to SUNJIR0

For sure. Chapter 2 of the book argues that, with people like Elon Musk and Curtis Yarvin, implicit feudalism is becoming increasingly explicit as a corporate and political philosophy.

The "founder mode" idea also correlates with this.

So no Bloodborne on PC ever? A masterpiece of a game forever imprisoned on substandard gaming hardware (barring emulators of course, *cough cough*).
AND, those games are probably now all gonna be chained to that idiotic PSN requirement, meaning that contrary to one of the statements cited in the article, which talks about being able to "deliver their IP to more users around the world". PSN lock-in does the exact opposite through geo-restrictions etc.

The most profitable patient is one with a chronic (highly functioning) illness, not a cured one.

When I lived in the US I was always amazed by the amount of ads for painkillers and other fixes. I came to the understanding that healthcare for many was not about curing people, but about making people able to work. I've never seen so many people with chronic illnesses poorly addressed as in the US.

I just posted a super-simple how-to guide for online community governanceโ€”basically just inviting communities to start with some important, often-neglected basics. If you know anyone who might appreciate this, please share! colorado.edu/lab/medlab/2024/1โ€ฆ
in reply to Nathan Schneider

Nathan, how would you describe online community building to a group of people who consider themselves a community, but not primarily an online one, but using platforms and social media "as is" in a "ubiquituous/ambient computing" situation? For whom ICT are just a tool to communicate internally and externally, which leave technicial decisions to "the techies"?

Thinking about how to untangle the knot at the @IDN.

This entry was edited (1 year ago)
in reply to jon โš

@yala @IDN I think this guide should be useful for many offline communities as well. But they may not need it; hopefully they already have organizational infrastructure and they just apply it to their online tools.
in reply to Nathan Schneider

It's interesting. Because we are a globally distributed group, the organisational infrastructure is a chat and Google Docs, therefore inherently online. But we have 50 % join rate from registration to the org to joining the chat, which is not a lot.
I was rather asking about how to raise awareness about this inherent online-ness, when everybody is already fed up and tired out from getting lost in platforms and logins.
An emphasis on synchronous collab is making things even harder.
in reply to jon โš

@yala Phew, I'm not sure what the best approach isโ€”other than meeting the community where it's at. These questions of on-boarding depend so much on context.
in reply to Nathan Schneider

Thank you. I think that's already a point I hadn't considered, because our experiences and expectations diverge so much. It's hard to meet in the middle.
