Not sure how much of the science community remains active here, but it's worth a shot. I'm trying to plot the genome-wide divergence between the mangrove and blue-winged pittas with ddRAD data using Fst calculated in 100kb windows across the genome (using pixy) and I'm getting this super noisy Manhattan plot. Is this normal for ddRAD data and relatively deeply diverged species? The massive divergence in the Z (sex) chromosome is super cool, though.

The Truth Of Systemd Deleting Your Home Directory!! #Linux #YouTube youtu.be/LZYswt66xK0
in reply to Brodie Robertson

systemd try not to get the entire linux community hating on them for 5 seconds challenge

I am very much enjoying HBO’s Silicon Valley. Also, super digging the #fediverse foreshadowing here this season aired in 2017. @Gargron are you familiar with this show?
in reply to JL Johnson

Yes, of course. This season came out a year after I'd started working on Mastodon, so it felt very close to home.

Yet another reason to hate consoles. Turned on my Xbox for a bit of Netflix…and got a fucking McDonalds sponsored advert on the home screen wtf

If you have ever been in an online group, you are well aware that its convenience comes with many limitations, including admins who have definitive control over everybody else.

These aren’t just annoyances — @ntnsndr 's newest piece discusses the “implicit feudalism” of digital groups and why we need more democratic communities online.

theconversation.com/why-the-fu…

in reply to New_ Public

The problem for us is 'democratic' groups require work and effort of the 'governed'. And nobody has the mental energy or wants to be involved to do that work.

Take a look at your HOA locally and your State gov't (you do know who your state reps are...right?).

Life's hard, and most of us don't bother to be involved in the things that directly affect us. And we get the predictable results.

Now add in 87 online communities and it's a tsunami of mental effort most of us just run from.

(edit: I don't mean this as accusatory towards anyone, just commenting on realities of what is needed and what most of us have in available extra mental capacity to deal)

in reply to Pusher of Pixels

@pixelpusher220 Agreed! This is a concern that I've grown increasingly interested in since finishing the book.

Here's a brief essay I did on the topic for co-ops, specifically: ownershipmatters.net/article/1…

I'm also currently polishing a more extensive paper on the topic (for online governance generally) with a team at Metagov to give governance designers tools for thinking through questions of attention.

If investor-owners can do it, so can participant-owners.

My first experience with Ilford Delta 400 was on medium format, so I should not be surprised it's a bit grainier than I expected on 35mm.

Haven't used this but did once enjoy B&W D&P with Beutler Tetenal Neofin developers for ultra-fine grain, then printing with a Schneider Componon lens, for the sharpest granularity, highest acutance images. HP4 & 5 I think.

Missing out on the smell? It was a bit of a non-addictive high. 😋

I urge anyone who only saw the angry toots and haters - i.e., everyone - to actually read the comments on the bug report regarding systemd deleting /home.

Aside from that first reply which was trash, virtually everything after that was super reasonable and honest about how dumb this issue was, discussing countless solutions to make sure this never happens again.

in reply to Thom, 🤝 Connecting People

As much I like Phoronix to hear about things going on, by often only including a single quote a lot of people just run with that as the entire story.

@BrodieOnLinux
Great and measured video on this Brodie, and a tiny clarification.

Despite what's mentioned in online discussion, fresh installs of Ubuntu LTS 24.04 (Desktop or Server) do not create any tmpfiles.d configuration, and especially not a home.conf

AFAIK the Ubuntu installer pre-creates the home directory (or existing partition in my case) and /home/<username> creation is either on adduser CMD or when that new user first logs in.

On-demand provisioning like cloud-init might differ.

in reply to Brodie Robertson

@BrodieOnLinux
I can't really keep abreast of the tech news in general or the Linux-adjacent stuff in particular without relying on RSS feeds and aggregators.

Phoronix itself is valuable but enough commenters want to spoil it compared with say The Register where there's sufficient good humour, anecdote and occasional useful tips in the comments.

China's Chang'e 6 mission to the moon was launched today.

The spacecraft and mission are very similar to Chang'e 5, which brought lunar rock samples back to earth in 2020, except that the Chang'e 6 landing site is on the far side of the moon (43.0°S 154.0°W).

Comms will take place via the Queqiao-2 relay satellite, which was launched on March 20 and is in an elliptical lunar orbit of 200×16,000 km at 62.4° inclination.

Mission time: 53 days
