Wondering how much of an impact, over how large an area, Hurricane Helene had?

Here are lights at nighttime on a typical day, and after the hurricane.

Two pictures of the eastern United States from space, taken at night when you just see electric lights. The one at the top is a normal night, and the one at the bottom is after the hurricane. You can see a broad, dark streak after the hurricane, showing the enormous area with no power.

I'm super interested to see what the Website League (websiteleague.org/) comes up with. (I might even join their Discord 😩) It's an island network being created by #cohost users that's allowlist-based and very conscious of governance. I'm down for an experiment like that. Why not?

The FAQ on their site has some helpful analogies and values statements. I'm especially curious how I'd find new folks/islands/neighborhoods to connect with in a practical sense. In looking for where to create Mastodon accounts for some things recently, I found that some very relevant instances weren't in the common instance search tools or weren't labeled in ways that made them come up when searching. That scenario seems even more likely in an allowlist-based environment.

Remember last week when we sent you that newsletter about replies, and then replied to all your comments? Well, we have auto-scaling for our ActivityPub infrastructure turned on, and with around 5,000 followers and a decent chunk of replies, it quickly scaled itself up to 10(!) servers to handle the load. One of the things we're learning as we go is that ActivityPub is resource-intensive, and can be pretty expensive/difficult to run robustly. Needless to say, if we're going to support tens of thousands of sites and millions of followers with Ghost, we'll have to do quite a lot more work here.

@polotek @poswald It’s really easy to make mistakes in computing that make a massive difference in performance. For example a database query that runs inside a loop vs outside. And it’s easy to miss when your code runs once but becomes really obvious once it has to run multiple times per second. I would not make any assumptions about the protocol itself based on Ghost’s work in progress implementation.
