"The Argentina-France showdown wasn't just the greatest World Cup final of all time, it was one of the most thrilling spectacles in sports, period, and a fairy-tale ending for the game's best-ever player." theringer.com/world-cup/2022/1…

Architecture was my career choice as a teen. I loved designing and drafting the plans. And I was good at it, winning awards at the Texas state level all four years of high school.

I didn't study #architecture in college because they were moving away from #drafting on paper (what I loved) to AutoCAD. Ironically, I've been in tech since 1998. 🤷🏻‍♂️❤️

Yes, Froendica is written in PHP, can't be better than Ruby. Thanks, but no thanks 😉

@boynux

Haha, I don't share your language preferences. At the risk of opening up a can of worms could you share your top point(s) about why you prefer Ruby over PHP?

I was told by my Friendica admin that it is is low resource and easy to self host. I agree that if you don't need the computing resources better not to consume them.

Weirdly satisfying to see @internetarchive's Wayback Machine checking, and attempting to archive, everything I ever tweeted, including every link in every tweet.
As you can see from the screenshot, these are many thousand tweets. Everything I ever did over there, from 2006 to 2022, now finished and safely kept beyond the reach of 🐦 or any other trackers or barriers.

I exspect the creators of this to be struck by lightning any second. (Although the result seems to be correct seeing the numbers.) #Names washingtonpost.com/business/in…

Well, there is a way to link mastodon posts to Twitter.😆

Some of you may have seen Elon Musk's endorsement of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s crazy antivax conspiracy theories today.

Over at post.news, I just posted a long-form piece about this, and about how science education needs to adapt to online disinformation.

Please a look. If you like it, boost it there or here or — if you dare — over on the birdsite.

We need, in the words of Noah Feinstein, to make sure that everyone is at least a competent outsider to science: someone who has "learned to recognize the moments when science has some bearing on their needs and interests and to interact with sources of scientific expertise in ways that help them achieve their own goals." onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10…
in reply to Carl T. Bergstrom

My argument, at its core, is that to do that, we need to teach people why science deserves their trust – and this requires teaching how science works as a social institution. I've written about this in brief in a Science American article: scientificamerican.com/article…

I'm leaving #Twitter for the time being. I'll keep the account around, but that's it. No more posts, and I uninstalled the app. I'll stick to #Mastodon for now!

KDE Plasma gets Wayland Fractional Scaling, Fixing Multi-Screen and a Steam Deck updater

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

I’ve been running GNOME for a bit but I might have to try KDE again, not just for the fractional scaling but also because I guess you can tell it to let xwayland clients handle their own scaling (read Steam, or some code editors) now? Instead of doing the blurry scaling on those windows you can let them just run direct and if they support hidpi no more blurriness!

For what it's worth, it doesn't have to be accurate. I couldn't remember which nonsense date I had given in the past and a random one worked.

Media people and organisations, start your own Fediverse servers! This is your chance to be in control of what you publish!

By remaining on Twitter you are helping Musk control you and your readers. You used to be in control before Twitter. The Fediverse is your chance to get back that control.

It is really cheap and easy!

Non-techy people go here:

➡️ growyourown.services/grow-your…

Techy people go here:

➡️ docs.joinmastodon.org/user/run…

The @TexasObserver has just started its own server, for example.

hi hello we are a two person indie game studio and we make narrative horror games scarlet hollow and slay the princess.

i guess we live here now!

we mostly post about our games, but we also talk about games marketing and narrative design.

#JohnMastodon is proof that things *CAN* go viral here on Mastodon, but the key is that *YOU* are the algorithm. The reason that the John Mastodon meme showed up on other people's timelines is because so many users boosted the posts.

The lesson here is: please don't just favourite something if you really enjoyed it; BOOST it so that other people can enjoy it, too! This is the only reason why I bother to create as large a social graph as I can on Mastodon—to act as an amplifier. You can, too!❤️😉

Project Mushroom

I’m genuinely curious to see what comes of this project. It seems like they have the right idea in defining it as an online community that is incidentally on Mastodon rather than an instance first.

I think Mastodon would be a lot less annoying for most users if local feeds were given the same priority as the fediverse.

And instead of trying to rebuild Twitter here, it’s helpful to remember Twitter dot com is a website but not the whole web
