"Because of the attritional nature of contemporary peer review (and the level of aggression frequently encountered), successes in both papers and grants are nowadays likely to be met not with celebration, but a sense of exhausted relief. The pleasure is always fleeting."

Have been using the #deathcult hashtag as a synonym of #neoliberalism, which is old fundamentalist capitalism that has come in waves, look at "classical liberalism" of the Victorian era that lead to the Irish and Bengal famines. And the last 40 years of mess in the west.

This is a mess we need to compost agen.

in reply to vagabond

@Hamishcampbell
I think the deathcult tag a good idea.. I just wonder if it should be pushed further to cover Nukes, MAD, Mutually Assured Destruction.. maybe the "classical liberalism" excuse to do stupid stuff is one aspect of a deeper, older problem...

I hope I'm not diluting the important attention-focusing effect of the tag though too.

@Birne Helene if you're interested in the subject, i followed this course recently . Very good channel with a doctor in place. Intelligence is a factor, but not a predominant one.

Thanks to @ntnsndr for this talk with Marjorie Kelly, author of Wealth Supremacy.

"Not only do we need to call out the bias and absurdity of the current system... but we need to take ourselves seriously as the next system." [my paraphrase]

Right on.

I also appreciated her quoting Robin Wall Kimmerer: "We are called to a movement made of equal parts outrage and love."

I'm glad I could catch the recording.

Why Are #Linux & Unix Admins In The Wheel Group?? youtu.be/5vmp6Pg8rWc
in reply to Brodie Robertson

This video prompted me to lookup wiki.debian.org/SystemGroups

I think it's broadly the same on Ubuntu but I wanted to understand the underlying basis and intended purposes anyway.

For example I might have been tempted to use the "staff" group for users in a workplace environment without being aware that it grants a priviledge a sysadmin may not have intended.

in reply to Brodie Robertson

i always thought it was somehow related to the mouse wheel. The group of people actually sitting in front of the PC and can use the wheel of the mouse.

Thanks for that knowledge update :blobcatlaugh:

Significant UX upgrade in Mastodon. If you're looking at someone else's post on a different server than your own, you no longer have to do multiple clicks and copy/paste to share the item.

You just put your own hosting server into the popup box and it shows you the post in context in your own timeline, and you can share it from there.

No this isn't perfect -- still too many steps.

But it's a major improvement.

Report: Gen-X parents used to wear costumes over snowsuits!

trick or treating

"Atlantic Canada — A new report today revealed that 'Gen-X' Atlantic Canadians are making astonishing and implausible claims about past Halloweens in the region.

"Social media is ablaze with reports from East Coasters born between 1964 and 1984, claiming that Halloween used to be so snowy and cold that they had to wear their costumes over their snowsuits every year.

“'Seriously, I looked like a fairy princess sumo wrestler,' claimed Jennifer MacDonald of Truro. 'It was so hard to hang onto our pillowcases wearing our mittens too. We didn’t have fancy bags like kids have today or parents to carry our loot. My parents would smack me with a pillowcase of candy if I asked them to carry it for me!'"

read the rest, it's hilarious!

the main problem with proton right now is valve doesnt ensure that games that work stay working, gotham knights? Doesnt work anymore. Gta 5? Doesnt boot anymore. Even the new counter strike update doesnt work without custom launch options. Ive been forced to pirate games i already own a few times because proton is completely borked with bullshit online service nonsense and third party launchers
