'Many politicians, pundits, and the general public now favor the lab leak idea. Most scientists, particularly virologists, do not. This schism threatens their legitimate and ultimately socially important work, as outlined in a peer-reviewed publication published on August 1 in the Journal of Virology that was written by 41 virologists. I am one of them.'

Muse's musings for the day:

It's much easier to be for something than to be against something.
Being against something can be disspiriting and cause burnout.
It can mess with your mental and emotional well-being, and be self eroding.

There is absolutely something to the concept of toxic positivity, but trust me, negativity is often toxic as well.

Like all things we need balance and nuance. We need to recognise when things are going wrong. We need to be able to say "no" and "stop". However, we cannot be consumed by only fighting wrongness. We must see a way to build functionality into our lives and our society. Be for a better world.

in reply to Muse

Being self-taught, I had a bit of impostor syndrome. A colleague (who had been formally trained) reminded me that I'd auditioned for the job against formally trained chefs who had experience at high end restaurants, and that I got the job.

The audition was 'demonstrate how to part a chicken and cook something with the chicken within 30 minutes.' What made the difference is that I was comfortable teaching/speaking, as well as cooking. (I made pan-seared chicken thighs, lemon-parsley rice, and glazed carrots. The review panel - the head chef, assistant head chef, and store manager - cleaned their plates. And I know that wasn't true of one of the other candidates.)

The serious side of ‘mansplaining’ has been lost. That’s where the harm begins
Rebecca Solnit

Correcting women who are experts in their field, talking over women who are experts in their field, expecting to be the only voice that is heard in a room when others know better: these are the tip of the iceberg and should be addressed. Not allowing others to speak simply for not being culturally privileged: that's the full problem.

Today we had @FineWolf on the podcast who wrote a blog post explainer on the recent Firefox Privacy Preserving Attribution that provided a way for regular people to understand what was going on.

hm. haven’t listened, but I’ll go out on a limb and guess that he still missed the point, as he did in said blog post?
in reply to Jonah Aragon

@jonah We clarified a couple of things and our opinions aren't as different as initially thought
in reply to Brodie Robertson

well I listened to the show now, and you discussed a lot of interesting topics, but I have to say I still think the discussion of the real issues with Mozilla/PPA is a bit lacking... Mastodon is not a great platform to get thoughts across though, so I'll just let it go 😆
in reply to Brodie Robertson

Thank you for the (to my ears) sober perspective on the matter of MozPPA. It has been incredibly reactive and naïve on this here mastodon.

in reply to Sursiendo

Maybe they should make better processors instead... They are fast, sure, but at cost of idiotic power and heat demands. It's so bad, idea of buying Intel CPU doesn't even cross my mind when AMD has so much better CPU's.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

maybe stupid question. If you love analog photos, how does digitizing them to share online affects the photo itself. Digitalization can introduce variants, depending on resolution, color correction, etc. It might be that what we see is not what you have and at that point, does it still make sense if we can’t see your photo in its own unicity?
