my first ever pull request to the #rust language has been merged! 🎉

github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull…

it's a documentation change to clarify how async blocks behave in regards to control flow. there was only one requested change, so i did a pretty good job of matching the tone and style of the other docs.

it was really easy to contribute once i found out how to use x.py. strangely enough, there doesn't seem to be an enforced line length limit (at least not for this section of the docs) so i just matched what the surrounding text was doing.

coincidentally, the contributor who reviewed my code is the same person who made the papaya crate i reported a memory safety bug in a month or two ago.

my changes are scheduled to land in rust 1.88, which should release on the 26th of june!

Beatrix Potter is best remembered for her charming tales of Peter Rabbit, but did you know she also studied #science?

Potter collected & examined beetles, butterflies, plants, bird eggs, shells, rocks, fossils & especially fungi. She conducted experiments & wrote a scientific paper with her own illustrations, presented at the Linnean Society of London. However, as a woman in the Victorian era, she couldn’t even attend the meeting.#history #art #books

I'm thrilled to share the release of some of my favorite interviews of my career—the Protocol Oral History Project. It explores wildly diverse kinds of protocols as a form of human governance, from state diplomacy to food in our guts: protocol.ecologies.info/

wouldn't financially sustainable open source software be better than foss?
Don't get why you wouldn't want to financially support all these different great developers that make open source software.
Let me know if I misinterpreted your foss posts?

I can't hear this without thinking of a version someone performed at an open mic night at a camp I used to go to. He changed the words to be about camping in bad weather, and it became a favourite.

“The belief that open source is unsafe or unusable is simply not true.” 💡

The Dutch cooperative SURF aims to prove that — by creating a framework to support digital commons and assist institutions in adopting open-source collaboration tools such as Nextcloud Hub.

in reply to Elle Cordova

I don't know if it's just me but I find it bizarre that they asked the CEO of a "typeface and technology company" to comment on the tomb of the pope, like the Catholic church is yet another startup in the tech industry.

I've been using #Betterbird for a few months now while I'm trying to migrate away from Outlook. It takes some time for testing and finding new work flows, but so far I like the improvements to Thunderbird.

Biggest challenge is finding a good way to mark emails for follow up, so they are added to my task list. BB is creating a copy, losing the link to the original email, but I might have found an add-on now. I'm open to suggestions!

in reply to It's FOSS

I have been using betterbird for a while. What impressed me the most was that it works in the system tray. I could not find this comfort in other applications on Linux.

since it feels criminal that the article doesn't mention it:

Git plugin.

Allows you to, not only have version control so you can rollback if anything goes wrong, but also the ability to push to a git server and use it as a "cloud" server; which could be a local git or a github repo.
