A number of folks have reached out to us over the past few months asking how they could help Mastodon out. Unfortunately, we haven't had the capacity to accept those kind offers at the time.

If you're interested in getting involved as a volunteer, please fill out this form (and share it around!) so we know who could help with what. (There is plenty that needs doing!)

Ich fange niemals an, Fragebogen auszufüllen, wenn ich sie nicht vor dem ersten Ankreuzen/Einsetzen etc. GANZ sehen kann.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

It is not very smart to ask for name and email BEFORE seeing the choices. This unnecessarily discourages people who want to participate. Normally, your own data comes at the end.

Here is a screenshot so you can see what you can choose:

We selected finalists in Phase 2 of our Deep Space Food Challenge. Beyond making safe, healthy, tasty food for astronauts, winning technologies may help address food insecurity on Earth: go.nasa.gov/3DuZjIz

in reply to NASA

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad research is being done, but food insecurity is caused purely by capitalist greed.

We already have way, way more food on Earth than we need to feed every human being, but corporations owning that food will rather it go to waste than feed someone for free.

One of Chile’s most active volcanoes, Villarrica, is having a minor eruption. 🌋

Low-level Strombolian activity – small, short eruptions – is common at Villarrica. As of Jan. 27, the alert level was still elevated at yellow (the second on a four-color scale).

“Walking the dog” is a basketball move designed to either gain time on the shot clock or burn time off the game clock. It’s been around for decades, but it’s become newly popular among this generation of players. How does it work? kottke.org/23/01/walking-the-b…
in reply to kottke.org

one of the teams in my 12 year old daughter’s parochial league is doing this, and it’s weird as hell since: A) they are typically losing by a lot, so they are wasting their own time B) there is no shot clock, and most most important C) league rules prevent full court press until the final two minutes.

So, basically, there is no difference between doing this and just dribbling the ball up a bit slower than usual.

in reply to kottke.org

Markquis Nowell at Kansas State does this same thing a number of times each game to the same effect. It used to be that this was an end of game situation play, but he does it the whole game.

'Digital Timescapes: Technology, Temporality & Society' published by Polity Books just arrived in post. Covers how the digital reconfigures time w/ respect to history/memory, politics/policy, governance, mobility/logistics, planning/dev, & work/labour. In my mind, 4th book in a set of Mapping Cyberspace, Code/Space, The Data Revolution, Digital Timescapes that plots spatial & temporal implications of digital infrastructure, software & data.

Spiders appear to offload cognitive tasks to their webs, a rare nonhuman example of “extended cognition” — animals using tools to think outside of the confines of their own heads. quantamagazine.org/the-thought…

Bees do the same with the combs. See “Buzz of the Bees” by J. Tautz if interested.
in reply to kottke.org

@shannonmattern the thing is, extended cognition has been observed in basically all animals … but maybe it depends on what school of thought you’re defining it with?

And the charging wire from the JSAUX M.2 SSD Dock fits in just fine.

I restarted my experiment after having learned lots of approaches that don't work -- specifically I've learned lots of ways to corrode metal, which is not what I want.

Anyway, I restarted a couple days ago. The negative electrode has developed a cloudy haze around it, which the positive electrode doesn't have. So what's in that haze? Bacteria! Check out this incredible picture. It's so perfect it looks like it came from a textbook!

I'm using 1V DC in a jar of fresh water with 304 stainless steel mesh electrodes, a small pinch of salt, and a small pinch of yeast extract. No aeration.

in reply to Danny (he/they)

@danwchan if anything at all manages to keep growing after reducing the amount of food to zero, then I think of that as success. It means the microbes had to get carbon from somewhere, and I think that's likely to be from co2.

Eventually I'll have to be much more controlled, eg sealed lids to prevent dust from falling in. But I'm not yet at the point where that matters, because so far I haven't gotten anything to grow without carbohydrates or light.
