Here. Enjoy Oscar and Olive during the Super Bowl. Olive could tell there was clearly no holding when KC got a free first down at the end, and Oscar was bored to death with the way the game ended. #catsofmastodon

This is also one of my favourite owl photographs I've made. These two Barred Owl (Strix varia) owlets were sitting together on this branch and were nice enough to still be there when I returned with a longer lens!

Before that guy, there was no wind chill.
It was -20 and storming, but it felt like -20.

But then that smart alec had to get involved.

in reply to Muse

The weather people love Wind Chill, as it gives them the opportunity to put some really alarming numbers up on the screen.

The write.as interface was as easy to use as promised. Nothing standing in the way of braindumping all my thoughts.

I wonder, though... this originally started as a masto thread, but I got annoyed at having to watch the character counts. Will using write.as for informal longer form text mean using Mastodon less?

Guess the only way to find out is to keep experimenting!

Personally, I'm a fan of using blogging platforms for long form content, rather than using threads on microblogging platforms. I think it is really about the right tool for the job.

The first alpha version of the upcoming Nested Timelines feature is ready for testing! Give it a spin and let us know how it goes. Thanks to all who donated to make this happen! 💙

⚠️ Not ready for production. Do not use in current or older projects! ⚠️

@gamingonlinux We still haven't documented this, but it is pretty straight forward. Basically every Sequence is a timeline (displayed in tabs). You may add sequences to other ones, hence the nesting.

in reply to Jen Sorensen

THIS! But I don't really miss that leaving home and talking with real people part tbh.

Can I compromise by going and buying stuff but in silence? xD

why is it “home of Super Bowl xxxx”? It’s more like a one-night stand, where afterwards they leave a mess and don’t even offer cab fare.

Just think of all the water getting used in that desert.

Still amazing that the only thing that knocks the Steam Deck from #1 top seller are these absolutely massive multi-million releases. Shows the staying power of the Deck.

Henrietta Lacks was a poor, Black, young mother diagnosed cervical cancer in 1951. When her cells were collected w/o consent, scientists saw they multiplied fast.

“HeLa” cells changed #science. They’re used globally to study viruses, drugs, hormones, genes, diseases & develop vaccines. Lacks passed away at 31 w no recognition.

Rebecca Skloot’s beautiful book about her life & legacy is changing that. Now her statue will replace Robert E. Lee in VA. nytimes.com/2022/12/20/us/henr… #history #HistoryRemix

I love the book and I had my students in AP Bio read it. It was a very sad and tough read for me every year. Why did I block out how sad her childhood was everyyear? #hela

Update: The family of Henrietta Lacks has reached a settlement with Thermo Fisher Scientific, a #science & technology company that used & profited from cells taken without her consent in the 1950s.

The announcement came yesterday on what would have been Henrietta Lack’s 103th birthday. npr.org/2023/08/01/1191283359/… /2

Oh, finally. I am very happy for the family. I worked a lot with HeLa cells and always thought about this weird story when taking them out of the incubator.

"Predatory publisher" is a vague term. I break it down into "vampire presses", "rent-seekers", and "scams."

More nuanced terminology should help advance conversations about controversial publishing groups.

Not only that, I ~tell all~ about a summer job I had selling kitchen knives 🔪 Trust me: they're related 😅

Also I did a poll 📝

Fission is in the news, but few recognize that a woman physicist was behind the discovery.

Lise Meitner’s brilliance led to the discovery of nuclear fission. But her long time collaborator Otto Hahn, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry w/o her in 1944, even though she had given the first theoretical explanation.

Albert Einstein called Meitner “our Marie Curie." She also adamantly refused to work on the atomic bomb during WWII. aps.org/publications/apsnews/2… #women #history #science #HistoryRemix
