Foldscope and Paperfuge, musings + personal interests
Manu calls their work #frugalInnovation / #frugalScience which I think are great terms because they suggest legitimate and impactful challenges targeting communities with few resources. Do folks believe in the impact enough to devote a career towards it / do funders believe enough to fund careers based on this work? Do folks realize they can start doing this work outside of traditional institutions? What are those challenges like?

Been riding the Amtrak and visiting the west US for the past week. Overall, the train vibes are way more fun than any plane I've ever ridden, but I am incredibly frustrated to watch cars going by on the highway faster than the train.

The experience has me joining the High Speed Rail Alliance. hsrail.org/ The US needs to catch up with the rest of the world.

in reply to Andrey Kurenkov

we did Chicago to Colorado last week and that was a very nice and easy overnight. For CO to CA we're inching along as the freight passes us left and right.
in reply to willie stedden

I've been doing NYC to Chicago and NYC to Toronto for my trips. It's more expensive than plane which is a bummer, but it's a nice trip. Also my last trip to Chicago got cancelled over and over because of weather and eventually I had to book a plane cause it was eating into some planned events.

I'm all for better passenger rail lines and I think the fight for them may also have intersections with pushing back on increasing freight rail profit margins via potential nationalization.

Ahhh, so thrilled that the joyously weird Everything Everywhere All at Once cleaned up at the Oscars last night! Michelle Yeoh! Ke Huy Quan! Jamie Lee Curtis! The Daniels! The rocks! Watch all of their acceptance speeches! (Not the rocks...) kottke.org/23/03/everything-ev…

The current state of much of our tech, we need to do better with the #activertypub #Fedivetse #openweb reboot, please pick up the shovals the is much composting to do.

Watch Stephanie Hsu's brilliant audition for Everything Everywhere All At Once. I won't say Jamie Lee Curtis didn't deserve her Oscar, but Hsu would have been my choice. youtube.com/watch?v=57se_y4DpX…

Loved her performance in Marvelous Mrs. Maisel which stood out even amongst the already outstanding cast.

Imagine you’re a 25 year old staffer in Congress responsible for drafting legislation, meeting with constituents, writing speeches & responding to lobbyists. You also make recommendations for how your boss should vote.

@cjonthehudson A dear friend & mentor once remarked that the most surprising part of his work on Capitol Hill was learning that the nation is largely run by people in their 20s & 30s.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

I started state legislative work at 29 and was relatively old; during the years I did a lot of congressional work was in my later thirties and well past the age of many of the people I was working with. In both places, there was the churn of young people who put in 5-6 years and moved on, and then there were the lifers.

How does he do it?

This is called the Inverse Cramer and there are extensive discussions about it on reddit. Short-term it's a winner.
