Get in Irwin, we're going Moon driving!

Apollo 15, the 4th mission to put humans on the Moon, launched #OTD in 1971. Folded up in the lunar module (LM) was the first Lunar Roving Vehicle, allowing Dave Scott and Jim Irwin to venture farther from the LM. go.nasa.gov/43FoEKi

Oh no, what have you done? Lunar landing deniers will have an absolute field day with this photo! I can already see the red arrows pointing to the details in the back, on the ground, and, if we're lucky, also at the uncovered heads.

We are incredibly lucky to happen to exist at this moment in time on one tiny blue planet in the unimaginable vastness of the cosmos.

A beautiful comic on the continuing relevance of the Luddite movement by @tomhumberstone thenib.com/im-a-luddite/

(bring back the Levellers while we're at it)

Thank goodness for The Nib and Matt, Eleri and the others' work over the past decade. They made an outsized contribution and while I'm sad they're shutting down, at least they're (sort of) doing it on their own terms.

I highly recommend #GDevelop. It strikes a great balance between ease of use and power/flexibility (and the free version is exceedingly generous - well worth a try before committing to a subscription).

Team Fortress 2 gets another update with lots of fixes gamingonlinux.com/2023/07/team… #TF2 #Steam #Valve
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

I think TF2 is an excellent game (one of the best multiplayer FPSs in history), but it's gotten just too unwieldy and bloated.

I still prefer the TF2 experience before they went all-in on the cosmetics and weapon variants.

Ah yes, the game they said was only possible due to the blazingly fast PS5, now playable on something with about as much power as a PS4 😝.
I am of course being facetious, but this is why you shouldn't listen to marketing.

And now protocols.io goes the way of Mendely:

If you don't want your personal data being sold or otherwise misused, stop using protocols.io!

Bit by bit, every useful tool in science is getting killed by the surveillance publishers.

Michael DeHaan (original author of Ansible) thinks the time is ripe for the world to see a Rust-based Ansible alternative—with potentially 90-95% compatibility with exsiting playbooks—that can scale to 50-100k systems through a new message bus option.

Following Twitter's lockdown of tweets, a lot of sites have seen their embedded timelines break.

If you're looking for a way to embed mastodon posts, I've just created a new project that lets you embed your timeline of toots.

🪶 It's lightweight (<2kb).
🙈 No tracking of any kind.
💅 Fully style-able with CSS

An #openscience question for earth scientists:

I'd like to know what standards earth scientists would use to store institution and coordinates of an experiment in an XML file?

Searching for metadata standards for geospatial data, I found, e.g.:

fgdc.gov/metadata/iso-standard…

Which is waaaaay too detailed for me. Anybody able and willing to help me out?

The Ordinaries is absolutely BRILLIANT! I saw it yesterday at the cinema. It reminds me a little of Pleasantville. Fascinating presentation of social messages, and a nice balance of pathos and comedy.

PragerU is propaganda. It isn't, in any way, an academic organization. It's a YouTube channel that makes lecture-style videos that explicitly promote evangelical Christianity, political disinformation, anti-LGBTQ talking points, Islamophobia, and Anti-Semitism.

Its namesake is conservative talk radio host Dennis Prager. In no way, shape, or form should these videos be in America's classrooms.
