buy carbon credits on the BC, play casino with them, lose your money, you lost the credits? they can't be offset anymore! We are doomed and it's your fault

the only way blockchain can save the planet is if it's used to create a system of real democracy where people get to paricipate in every decision for the government, that way we can maybe stop relying on people who lick the oil industry's ass as long as it gives them short term cheap energy

Physicist John Tyndall is often credited w discovering the greenhouse effect, which he wrote about in 1859.

But Eunice Foote published a paper - 3yrs earlier - demonstrating how atmospheric water vapor & CO2 affected solar heating. She theorized that heat trapping gases in Earth’s atmosphere warm its climate.

Tyndall was widely read. And Foote, being a woman, wasn't even permitted to present her own work. climate.gov/news-features/feat… #history #science #ClimateChange

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

Well, there you go: "The sphere of woman embraces not only the beautiful and the useful, but the true" (on introducing the scientific work of Mrs. Eunice Foote)
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

At the risk of being accused of mansplaining, the idea that the atmosphere changed/affected planetary temperature, later referred to as the greenhouse effect, is down to Joseph Fourier who obsessed about heat transfer for decades.
What Eunice Foote spotted was that CO2 and wet/damp air gave rise to heating in a glass jar when exposed to sunlight. Her lovely, simple experiment, that many of us have repeated as a demonstration, is actually quite hard to explain…

....nice

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

"it is not surprising that median revenue of Godot games is around $200. Godot is still in its infancy, so it is not yet used by major developers."

...so you could say you're waiting for Godot...

Channeling The Who's “Won't Get Fooled Again" and The Rolling Stones "You Can’t Always Get What You Want” to explain why I do not trust Bluesky

And it is not - contrary to @pluralistic's view - that I fear what Jack Dorsey might do, and it might go the way of Twitter / Musk

It is that I cannot (yet? ever?) trust how Bluesky and the AT Protocol are built and if it will be the network we need - in terms of design

It reminds me of a Story in the german computer magazin c't.

Basically selfdriving cars were destroying themselves and there drivers because of an small error. No one was to know about this error, since that would ruin the reputation of self driving cars. Hence they drove all off a remote cliff and drowned them self. 🤷‍♂️

The Blood Collages of John Bingley Garland (ca. 1850–60). Strikingly modern Victorian-era collages featuring religious themes (the blood in question is Christ's) by a merchant politician. I love running across seemingly out-of-time objects like this. kottke.org/23/09/the-blood-col…
in reply to kottke.org

That book is incredible. You can view (and download) the high res scans at the Harry Ransom Center website but plate 43 is duplicated, which means that we don't get to see the real page 44. This is badly messing with my OCD because every plate is majestic.

Question for those involved in document and standards preparation supporting open source projects: Would you consider it a requirement to have an online-friendly non-Microsoft-Word method of document production (asciidoc, gitbook, etc.)? Would you consider it a show-stopper to be limited to MS Word as a submission format? (For comparison @OpenGridForum supports many formats, see docs.ogf.org/ogf-documents-and… and has an online submission and preparation alternative, but a partner org may require Word.)
in reply to Alan Sill

If word format as produced by libreoffice is acceptable then I could live with it (but bellyache a bit). Simple text doesn't look odd, and if someone complains the document looks off tell them it must be something with their settings. After all, word isn't compatible with itself so nobody is really going to know.

But better to ask for a simple format (markdown) and convert to word for those orgs that need it.
