"Fiasco" has a fun origin!
It goes back to an Italian phrase that meant "to make a bottle." Weird!
Nobody knows for sure what that meant, but the leading theory seems to be that the loser in a game would have to buy the next bottle of wine.
It was first used in English as theater slang to describe a failure or breakdown in a performance.

When we think of #food, we often aren’t paying attention to soil, but it’s actually what sustains our global food system.
Unfortunately, #ClimateChange, unsustainable farming practices & more are degrading soil around the world.

Charles Seber was using some of the planter systems that he made, to experiment with changing the soil grades.
It had to be done within the normal crop-rotation cycle process to avoid nutrient-depletion, but it worked well as a route towards generating healthy soil bacteria. 😁.
The planters operate by optimising the conditions for soil bacteria growth. 😁

My latest preprint exploring transposable element (TE) activity in the genomes of sparrows.
biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/…
We found remarkably high levels of repeat content in the newly generated genomes of
Bell's, Song, and Savannah Sparrow. 31% of the Bell's sparrow genome is spanned by repetitive elements.
This is ~3x as much as previously reported in most songbirds.
Thanks to all my co-authors for their contributions to this project!

Synth genius Wendy Carlos studied physics & music at Brown & Columbia. She helped develop the 1st Moog synthesizer & her 1968 classical album Switched-On Bach went platinum. She brought #music & tech together & composed soundtracks for A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Tron & more.
Carlos was assigned male at birth & transitioned to female. Unfortunately, many journalists focus more on her gender than her accomplishments that changed music forever. wendycarlos.com
