I got a lot of responses to my post about Cohost's "Following" pane from people who *used Cohost*, but didn't know the pane was there. You know, it was just in the left hand sidebar the whole time? It makes me wonder what else people have staring them in the face all day and they never think to click it. For example, I wonder how many people using Mastodon have never clicked on the "Parasitic Wasps" button in the right hand sidebar. That's the pane that… well, I'll just let you try it yourself.

🤯 I just (re?)learned that the current Steam-purchasable #DwarfFortress is published by Kitfox Games, who made a game that I found absolutely captivating, "Lucifer Within Us". It has a very cool timeline-scrubbing mechanic for investigating mysteries, and it got weirder than I expected towards the end.

IIRC, the ending felt a bit sudden, but I wanted a follow-up very badly. 😂 I streamed the first couple hours of it many moons ago: irrsinn.video/w/myF9P9dFya7az5…

This is a town that lives up to its stereotypes with remarkable shamelessness.

We just released Mastodon 4.2.13 and 4.1.20. They contain a few bug fixes, a security fix (high severity, only impacting Ruby <= 3.2) and a critical security in a dependency is you use SAML authentication (CVE-2024-45409).

Release notes and upgrade instructions are available on our GitHub Releases page: github.com/mastodon/mastodon/r…

the mob looks cool but it has 0 utility, the only useful thing is that we are getting a new wood color.
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

Oh, and maybe another boss mob "you're not supposed to defeat" but rather "enjoy" the tedium of sneaking around it for hours?

On the whole, Minecraft and Mojang have coasted for sooo long on the work put into and the popularity of 3rd party devtools, mods and plugins, otherwise the handful of underwhelming new things they release once in a blue moon would have diminished the game's popularity a long time ago.

Why wouldn't the iceman just use his tongs and bring the ice into the kitchen, where the icebox was?
in reply to Muse

Iceboxes are more like 1950s tech, I think.
In the early days, there was no refrigeration, and primitive insulation, so ice had to be kept in the cold and dark in special straw boxes to make it last for months.

So with Cohost shutting down in about 24 hours, a note to every remaining social media site: You should totally rip off the "Following" pane.

Cohost had a view where (as alternative to the normal linear feed), it showed everyone you follow, sorted by last post, and you could click to see recent posts. A problem with social media is the more you post, the more space you take up. Cohost "Following" made everyone take up the same amount of space, while still prioritizing recency. A nice compromise

Check out the catch up view in @phanpy, a third party web client for Mastodon. It is exactly that.

Many mysql processes "/usr/bin/mariadbd" and CPU at 100%,makes Friendica unstable

Hello @Friendica Support I need your support please
I have a problem for a few weeks now which makes my server unstable , and makes Friendica inaccessible, the simplest and fastest solution is to restart the server.
I noticed that this problem also happens to me when I send friend requests

Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS
Friendica version 2024.08
mariadb Ver 15.1 Distrib 10.11.8-MariaDB, for debian-linux-gnu (x86_64) using EditLine wrapper

As you can see from the screenshot there are many mysql processes , /usr/bin/mariadbd , and the CPU is at 100%

Some help please...

Thanks
Cheers

in reply to Anomaly ☑️

Have a look at your MySQL/MariaDB settings. It seems as if you could assign more memory to it. Have a look at the innodb settings. I can't really suggest any specific values, see here: mariadb.com/kb/en/mariadb-memo…
in reply to Michael 🇺🇦

Hi @Michael Vogel
I tried to change my configuration /etc/mysql/my.cnf I added

[mysqld]

join_buffer_size = 2M
innodb_log_file_size = 1G
tmp_table_size = 512M
max_heap_table_size = 512M
wait_timeout = 60
max_connections = 500
skip-name-resolve
query_cache_size=64M
innodb_buffer_pool_size=4600M
key_buffer_size=1G
innodb_file_per_table=1
innodb_log_buffer_size=212M
innodb_buffer_pool_instances=5
innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit = 1
innodb_flush_method = O_DIRECT
open_files_limit=40000
table_open_cache=2200
wait_timeout=28800
interactive_timeout=28800
max_connections=1000

This is the current configuration,I made small changes at a time, but the problem is the same (Bad Gateway Error 502), with the other configurations I had little RAM usage but the CPU was at 100% .

It could be an inefficient/Slow query? 🙄

For discoverability and user experience, it could be worth moving these hashtags away from the sidebar (which is usually navigation that isn’t contextual to the content) and to the profile itself? And for the profile owner themselves, add an “Edit featured hashtags” next to it?
