Moving to the right failed big in the last election, so the Democratic party has decided to move even farther to the right.

America is where it is because Americans are stupid.

France showed the way to defeat the far-right: move to the left, so we can only conclude that Democrats are deliberately trying to lose.

still haven't found a dictionary for DGS signs for stuff like "anarchism", "Marxist backstabber", "democratic confederalist" etc. even ASL with its overwhelming presence it's hard to find political terms. but I now know a LSM word for zapatismo:

though it doesn't seem to be used here

at 1:40-, it's easy to see when the interpreter fingerspells sub. Marcos but I'm not able to parse which sign she's using for "zapatismo" immediately after. it doesn't help that the dang video keeps cutting away the interpreter lol

Incredible statement from the American Meteorological Organization. It takes a lot for a scientific organization to issue a statement like this:

"U.S. leadership in scientific innovation is at risk due to the recent and ongoing reductions in U.S. federal science capabilities. The consequences to the American people will be large and wide-ranging, including increased vulnerability to hazardous weather...Recent terminations within the government workforce for science are likely to cause irreparable harm and have far-reaching consequences for public safety, economic well-being, and the United States’ global leadership."

R.I.P. James Harrison, Australian hero, whose blood contained a rare antibody used to create medication to protect babies from a rare blood disorder. Having the antibody was just luck. What made him a hero was donating plasma every two weeks without missing one appointment for 60+ years. Demasiada ingenuidad... 😔

@elmau

in reply to Sursiendo

in reply to elMau

@elmau
in reply to elMau

in reply to la_jes

in reply to elMau

@elmau @habiaunajes

Mastodon has a serious spam problem which challenges my use of this platform.

Every day a person is creating new spam accounts to pollute the replies to my posts with Kremlin propaganda. Then when I block these accounts, the person creates new accounts and continues.

It is 13:00 and I have taken down 4 accounts already, and now more will be created.

@Gargron @renchap it is a pattern:
1. Random account created
2. Hits follow on my account
3. Replies with propaganda
4. Is blocked.
5. GOTO 1

in reply to Randahl Fink

You can filter out notifications from accounts created less than 30 days ago. Check the gear menu on the notifications page in the web app or official mobile apps.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

There's a whole bunch of cool controls there. Nice - I didn't know that existed.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

thank you. I have now set it to "filter".

I really wish, Mastodon took advantage of their pattern of following the same political accounts, because I do not think this is normal behavior.

I reckon, normal accounts discover accounts to follow organically. But this spammer creates his account, then immediately hits follow on my account and a few others.

@renchap

in reply to Eugen Rochko

While that is a short-term solution, the rest of us will still see these comments and they have the potential to derail conversation or scare people off.

I hope it's possible to implement some sort of check on account behavior, maybe auto-flagging them for admins. If they display behaviour which isn't human-like and are not marked as a bot account, perhaps.

Just brainstorming here, but it might be worth looking into as mastodon continues to grow.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

This will not work in the long run. They will create "farms" of accounts, foster them for 30 days, and then start the spam attack.
Easy to automate.

Think you’ve got all the tools? This office suite might surprise you! 📄

itsfoss.com/onlyoffice-feature…

in reply to It's FOSS

i love onlyoffice. I prefer it over Libreoffice, though it takes a bit of getting used to having one app that contains every document function
in reply to It's FOSS

I love this. People often complain about MS Office compatibility and no-one knows OnlyOffice which is great for that.

It has a similar interface, has better support for MS Office documents and supports cloud collaboration (yes I know about Collabora but that is in browser only). Unless you're doing something really complex it will do you just fine. I even install it on Windows for people that don't want to pay the subscription.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, speaking on Sunday's "Meet the Press," argued the cash crunch would end if Congress repealed the Social Security tax cap:

U.S. taxpayers only pay Social Security taxes on the first $176,100 of their annual wages.

He said that means the ultrawealthy like Musk pay the same amount into the program "as a truck driver."

I try to be more of a person (rather than just a brand) here on Mastodon, but sometimes it's hard.

Like, the world is falling apart in eight different ways, but also, I need to say "Here is a video about language in the Oscars." It makes me feel crazy.

But anyway, here is a video about AI & language in the Oscars. The event is tonight, and someone on my team went to the work of making the video, and the guest gave his time, so I should share it. Also, it's really good.

The fact that you are more of a person than a brand on Fedi is why I follow you and started listening to your podcast again. I understand that can be hard but please don’t stop; we need more people like you that are willing to be themselves and not just hide behind a brand.

As the minimum in Antarctic sea-ice extent has now dipped below 2 million km² for the third year in a row, it is looking increasingly like this is the new normal. In the 10 years up to 2015 the minimum extent averaged more than 3 million km².
Graph shows extents from National Snow and Ice Data Center over past two Antarctic summers compared to longer term average.
in reply to Rob Larter

A second reason is that the normal seasonal fluctuations in sea-ice extent are of great ecological importance. The plankton bloom that occurs each Spring as the sea-ice edge retreats is the foundation of the Southern Ocean food chain.
A decline in Antarctic sea-ice extent will result in this Spring bloom occurring earlier and further south, with uncertain ecological consequences.
in reply to Rob Larter

A third reason is that sea ice in front of ice shelves (parts of the ice sheet that flow out over the sea) protects them from ocean swell, and in some areas continuous sheets of “landfast” sea ice buttress ice shelves directly.
