From that one time I saw the most perfect window scene and felt obligated to capture it.

I was inside the capital building of Antigua #Guatemala and as I walked up the stairs I looked out the stairwell window to see this gorgeously framed flower pot. Someone had to have put it there on purpose! I particularly enjoy the effectively black canvas created by the dark interior behind.

Anyone remember these? Isn't the Dairy Queen sweet!

Dairy Queen

My grandmother had a kitchen drawer FULL of these.

in reply to Muse

I just checked on Google Maps. There are 7 DQ stores within 15 minutes of my abode. I never eat there, but they are ubiquitous around here.
in reply to Muse

My earliest memory of Dairy Queen was my grandpa saying, "Who wants a softie!" to us grandkids. Surprise...we always said, "YES!"

He would get us all the regular cones and one child-sized. They wouldn't allow adults to buy from the children's menu. He had type 1 diabetes, so this is how he would sneakily get himself a treat as well!

Years later after he was gone, I mentioned Grandpa's softie treks to my mother. "WHAT!" she said, "He wasn't supposed to have those!" Then went quiet. He lived a long and satisfying life. Those few moments of joy with the grandkids, I suppose were worth it to him. We miss you Grandpa!

As I end-of-life my Mastodon sunrise/sunset bot, it seems an appropriate time to vent my complaints about Mastodon as a platform. v.cx/2025/04/mastodon-exit-int…
in reply to Rob Shearer

Thanks for the respectful & thorough notes. I absolutely love what the federated web is trying to do, and Mastodon is my only “guilt-free” social site.

But as a UX designer (and a guy who wants his non-techie friends to feel comfortable enough with the federated web to move over from Insta / X), it’s hard seeing concerns about usability (and your other points) dismissed in order to keep the club small.

I hope this inspires change, either at here or a new site.

@Gargron @rcbo mastodon.social/@GroupNebula56…

The problem here (and the problem that the infamous "Mastodon Won't Survive" article had years ago) is that you're evaluating the network compared to traditional social media. There is a clear difference, and while I think many of your points are valid and improvements do need to be made, this is more akin to saying the entire internet is bad because one browser stinks in your opinion.

in reply to Rob Shearer

@rcbo This is not an employee or representative of Mastodon, their view does not reflect on or affect the design and usability of the platform.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron Not by you, to my knowledge. Generally, the sentiment of replies from folks here when I mention the need for it to be easy for non-techies to join, is a reaction of fear. Like it’s best as exclusive club.

That, and a few other UX barriers to “normie” usage (e.g. easy cross-server interactions & global-ish search) still make it a hard sell to friends. #UX was mentioned as a big barrier in a “Fedi House” event at SXSW.

I sometimes go through these lists to see if I have missed anything.
This time around I'm frustrated by the movies that were left out.
Where is Nausicaa or Laputa? How about After Yang or Robot & Frank?
And of course these lists miss all sorts of international stuff, but these people are trying--but not very hard when it comes to movies with female leads. Where is Tremors or Barbarella?

The best sci-fi movies of all time, ranked

in reply to Muse

@Deb Zaccaro-Rojas For comedy how about The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra?? At least they have Galaxy Quest.
in reply to Muse

Adding 'Galaxy Quest' was a pleasant surprise. 'Akira' was not a surprise. Not a single mention of 'The Electric State' was a disappointment. 'Lost Skeleton' is considered a parody, that might be why no mention.

every time someone asks me if they're spelling a word correctly and they get it right i have to restrain myself from saying "that is corrict!" in a terrible guy montgomery impression

We found a really cool giant virus inside the genome of a green alga, and it has a very strange infection cycle that is hard to detect.

There are reports going back decades of viral particles spontaneously appearing in pure cultures of green algae, so this phenomenon seems quite common but mostly overlooked.

Would adding something along the lines of "fair data sourcing" as a value make sense to you?
This entry was edited (8 months ago)
in reply to nigini

@nigini I suspect that might be hard to achieve given that the commodity models do not do this at present. But can you think of ways to easily bootstrap fair data sourcing without having to do large-scale model training?
in reply to Nathan Schneider

Very true @ntnsndr. At least for now, it is unreasonable to set a training pipeline. I think, though, that to make chatbots really useful, they need to be fine-tuned to certain purposes (and maybe that is a first opportunity.) Another high-level service that would be valuable and could use high-quality-fairly-sourced data would be versions of KOI Pond. ;)

the best part about Linux is that the terminal is the most powerful and its made to be the king and the most important, unlike on Windows or Mac where the terminal or command prompt is an afterthought that most of the time lacks behind the os and is only used by "nerds" in the eyes of the normal people.
