I realize there's a lot of AI-skepticism on Mastodon, but I think it's important to track how AI is being used more widely. So I spoke to GitLab's head of Field CTOs Brian Wald about how enterprises are implementing AI technology. Among other things, we discussed whether IT departments allow #VibeCoding, what types of AI #agents enterprises are building, how the #developer role is shifting to an architect-type role, and GitLab's own AI strategy. thenewstack.io/the-field-cto-v…
in reply to Richard MacManus

I’m baffled, this sounds like what software engineering always has been.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron I think he was saying that, in enterprises at least, often it was the product manager that defined the business logic, and once that was done it would be passed to the developers to implement. And from my time (long ago, admittedly) working in IT departments, that was mostly how it worked. But now that AI can generate code, developers are being tasked more with business logic and architecture. YMMV I suppose, but that’s a trend a senior Field CTO is observing.

I would have tested it, but this far it's been deeply depending on #systemd which I think it's wrong way to go, as there are multiple init system and not the #unlx
way of doing things, posrting getting nasty as say BSD don't use systemd at all.
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

That looks fantastic, but yeah that price tag is definitely going to be as big a factor as the specs for this one. Wow.

There is no mention of the "high-performance backend" that's necessary to use Talk's videoconferencing capabilities with more than 2-3 users. Does this mean the high-performance backend is now incorporated into the Spreed app by default now? When did this needed bugfix take place?

The new pope's name is hugely significant. Pope Leo XIII was the founder of modern Catholic social teaching, a prophet of economic justice: osf.io/preprints/osf/jhrmd_v1

And an enemy of (real) antisemitism.

May peace with justice roar with this lion.

in reply to Nathan Schneider

What do you mean by "an enemy of (real) antisemitism"? I know about Rerum Novarum, but I don't know what Leo XIII had to say about Jews or Judaism.
in reply to M. Grégoire

@mpjgregoire At a time when European Catholics were fuming in the Dreyfus affair, Leo XIII was a rare voice who opposed antisemitism vigorously.

Random reminder that #BillGates is the reason why AstraZeneca #COVID vaccine is patent-encumbered:
wired.com/story/opinion-the-wo…

> Gates bragged about convincing Oxford University not to open-license its vaccine. Gates leveraged his $750 million donation to the university for vaccine research—even though its vaccine was developed in a publicly funded lab. Eventually, Oxford sold the sole right of production to AstraZeneca, with no guarantee of low prices and an extraordinary opportunity for profit.

Seeing more and more of this on Steam lately and it genuinely bugs me. You're never going to improve if you get AI to generate something for you.

I get it, marketing is hard, but you're not even doing the work if you're just telling the plagiarism machine to do it for you.

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

it's also going to put a lot of people off ever touching your game

and yeah, some people on the forums will go "HA HA I BOUGHT THREE COPIES BUY TWATCOIN", but they're probably lying and you do NOT want them to be your audience

I'm just gonna namedrop, inZOI is a sims ripoff that's in early access, uses AI to generate character models, and costs $55 CAD. I may as well just buy DOOM Eternal.

I’m pretty boring when it comes to terminal customisation. I installed and configured Starship, but other than that I usually only change fonts and set the cursor to an underscore.

I have considered using other shells, but bash is good enough for me. It’s one less thing to install and configure.

For the terminal font, I use the Monaspice font, which is a NerdFont-patched version of GitHub’s Monaspace font, which I now use as my monospace and programming font.
