A view into the gorge from the visitor center in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Forest types within the park include oak-hickory, oak-maple, oak-yellow pine, mixed oak, hemlock-hardwoods, northern hardwoods, and cove hardwoods, along with other intriguing plant communities such as the Appalachian Riverside Flatrock Community. This image shows the colors of the trees and vegetation on the slopes of the New River Gorge. New leaves are opening and colors are changing, with tans, browns, yellows, and greens among the more prominent. The river itself is visible in the center of this view. While today’s sky is a bit overcast, this image from yesterday shows the park under blue skies.
