Rapid global phaseout of animal agriculture has the potential to stabilize greenhouse gas levels for 30 years and offset 68 percent of CO2 emissions this century
Animal agriculture contributes significantly to global warming through ongoing emissions of the potent greenhouse gases methane and nitrous oxide, and displacement of biomass carbon on the land used to support livestock.journals.plos.org
It bears mentioning that the reason the #penguin chicks are so hesitant (to jump) is b/c this is typically done from FAR lower heights (often off a ground-level ice sheet), not a 50' cliff.
They are having to do this b/c so much of the lower ice has melted. π #GlobalWarming #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis

Rising temperatures could transform plankton and other tiny aquatic organisms into a huge source of #carbon #emissions, a little-knownβand potentially catastrophicβclimate tipping point that could accelerate #globalwarming.
A study, published Thursday in Functional Ecology, found that rising temperatures cause a sudden shift in these microbesβ eating habits, flipping them from carbon absorbers to carbon emitters.

Breaking news :/
Based on daily data, the atmospheric CO2 concentration at Mauna Loa averaged ~424.0 ppm over May 2023. That's ~3.0 ppm higher than last year, and that's a lot.
It is also the highest monthly average on record, and most probably of the last 15 million years.

"Gone for good? California's beetle-killed, carbon-storing pine forests may not come back
Ponderosa pine forests in the Sierra Nevada that were wiped out by western pine beetles during the 2012-2015 megadrought won't recover to pre-drought densities, reducing an important storehouse for atmospheric carbon."

Bring on Climate Change Chuck!
If prophets for planetary change must come in the form of rodents, then that is what me must do.
200 gigatons of ice here, 200 gigatons of ice there, pretty soon you're talking about massive coastal inundation. #GlobalWarming
Quite the early eulogy for humanity. Best to tread the tight rope of #GlobalWarming reporting:
βwant to scare people enough to take the problem seriously but not so much as to make them feel hopeless [while] they want to reassure people that a climate-secure future is possible but only enough to avoid complacency.β

With climate disasters piling up, global warming is getting worse β fast. We had better learn to embrace our despair, argues AFPβs environmental editor Marlowe HoodCorrespondent
