Wilsonville, Oregon-based ESS Inc. built on NASA’s early work as the company developed its own flow batteries using only iron, salt, and water.

ESS flow batteries are designed for power grids that are increasingly powered by intermittent wind and solar generation. The company’s systems store up to 12 hours of energy and are used to provide backup power to critical community facilities.

"They landed on jets of fire in remote mountains. We weren't ready when they descended, clearing all before them"
in reply to NASA

After finally seeing auroas this year, I've been curious how the colors of these jets/sprites relate to how auroras at different altitudes appear. Seems like green would be expected toward the middle or bottom, so it probably works somewhat differently
