This dead star is bursting back to life

It would appear that a distant star has sprung back to life after its explosive death, blasting out repeated energetic flares over a period of several months that are like nothing astronomers have seen before.

Honestly "Close but still so far" sums up the experience developing COSMIC for the last couple of months pretty well. 😅

If you ever had a vaccine, injection or surgery, you’re indebted to the ancient & wondrous horseshoe crab.

Its blue blood contains Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) which clumps at contact with bacterial toxins. Animals are caught for their blood to test sterility of medical equipment & injections.

Unfortunately the harvest is unsustainable & populations are in decline. An effective synthetic substitute has been around for 2 decades & we just need the biomedical industry to switch. #SharedPlanet

*Finally* finished my baby blanket! Very snug timing, because I'm driving up to see that branch of the fam this weekend. 😅

Still need to block it out and hopefully have it at least mostly dry on the trip up. It's been over a decade since I've done a blanket and I'm pretty sure I didn't block those out, so I'm following a guide. 😬 I think I had in my head that it wasn't worth blocking acrylic? Don't know if that's true, but this one is cotton.

Tennis shoes gym shoes, or sneakers? What did you call athletic shoes where you grew up? (Me, in northern WI: tennis shoes or “tennies”.) kottke.org/23/11/do-you-say-te…
in reply to kottke.org

I didn’t grow up in the US or speaking English, so when I came here I just call them as the translated version of what they are: workout shoes or running shoes (since I go run in them).

I also play tennis and so “tennis shoes” refer to a specific pair of shoes for that specific activity only.

in reply to kottke.org

in the north of England, it was (and still is) just ‘trainers’ whether it was a pair of regular Nikes, proper running shoes, tennis shoes or Vans.

But separate terms were football boots, golf shoes, basketball boots (even though similar styles get called trainers) and the little flat canvas rubber-soled shoes we had in PE/gym class were referred to as ‘plimsolls’.

#bioawk is a command-line gem; it’s an extension of awk that auto-assigns variables for BED, SAM, VCF, GFF, and FASTX[AQ] format files, speeding up routine tasks.

For FASTX:

$2:seq
$3:qual (FASTQ only)

I can still remember the mantra "sed grep awk" from my intro bioinformatics prof....
in reply to Frank Aylward

@foaylward same - I think I just ended up never using awk because it was too difficult to remember, or it was so much easier to do it other ways. My muscle memory pretty much amounts to cat | grep | sed | less :->

4 types of surname in English - location, trade, patronymic, and my favourite, the nickname.
in reply to Muse

Yeah, my surname was originally "by the cross roads". Then "by the cross". Then "cross-by". Then Crosby. Aledgedly.
in reply to Muse

My Chinese name is a patronymic: Zhou (surname) Siu (younger) Bat (grandfather's name). My American name is also a form of patronymic, I'm still named after my paternal grandfather, only it's his paper name. But only my grandparents ever referred to me as Robert Lai, Jr.
