Ever wonder how pickling works? youtu.be/gw6YpN2oRog?si=Bv8DW9…

Four years ago our PBS team created this fun explainer on all different types of pickles! And it's still one of my favorite episodes. #food #science

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

That’s a great video but cucumbers don’t shrink much during brining (and pretty much not at all for pickling with vinegar). Instead, smaller varieties or young cucumbers are used. Large cucumbers stay large.

Me raising a glass of gratitude 🍷 on Fediverse Day to the ActivityPub founders: @cwebber@octodon.social, Jessica Tallon, @erincandescent@queer.af, @rhiaro@toot.cat, & @evan@cosocial.ca! Thanks to you five we not only have credible alternatives to the centralized social networks, but also the ability to communicate with each other across various platforms. Cheers! 🥂 Note: glass is full of cranberry juice as I can not tolerate the taste of most alcoholic drinks! 😂🤣😂

Wow, Jurgen Klopp announces that he’s leaving Liverpool at the end of the season. I don’t follow a particular PL team, but I do really like watching Klopp’s side play. thisisanfield.com/2024/01/jurg…

this is to bolster their stock just before end of quarter reports
Everyone is pulling short term crap because they are afraid of our election cycle right now and wanted to grab profit at the top end or cut losses.

yep... tail, meet dog 😒

if the young gamers start to understand how the politicians and big money are screwing up their games, maybe they'll start to pay attention and get involved

(if older gamers haven't figured it out by now, welp...)

in reply to Joseph Teller

Unfortunately the older gamers aren't for the most part good at understanding how the mechanics of the market works... there's only 2 or 3 major remaining news outlets out there in the computer gaming field that do anything more than just float news releases from the companies.

Seen on the other place.

I have been mystified why K represented Lysine for many years. Undergrad #biochemistry lecturer said “I don't know why, but I assume it is because of the end of the side chain looks like a K”. Well, turns out the answer is more simple.

my thoughts on the people out there unironically sticking massive australia flags in their lawns and oversized utes for invasion day like this is the US or something:
in reply to :evdonia_corner_emblem: Amelia Bjornsdottir (she, they)

@amelia
26th of january, aka australia day

there's a movement here to rename it to invasion day to reflect that it marks the arrival of the colonialist settlers in aus, and to instead celebrate either not at all, or another date such as the 3rd of march, the day the australia act (which gave australia sovereignty and (mostly) independence from the UK) was enacted

new favourite feature of my android phone: if you hold the delete key for too long, the entire UI crashes, closing every app you had open

this feature combines really well with the tendency of the modern web to add long strings of tracking parameters to every URL

and yes, closing every app includes the screen recorder, which is why this video is a camera pointing at a screen

in reply to Lynnesbian

wow that's a massive url.
by the way, simple mobile tools have been acquired by someone bad, and people have began to fork the apps and make them green (fossify gallery is already availible on f-droid)
in reply to linguist

@linguist thanks for the heads up! i actually have the fossify version, but the icon is still orange for some reason, idk why :blobcatgooglyshrug:

Hm I might be ignorant, but why not just make the desktop entry for icons an array? There will be only known static icons to be used, but windows of this app can have different icons.
