Actor Andre Braugher has died at the age of 61. Aww man, I absolutely loved Braugher in Homicide: Life on the Street. theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2…

I did not give Brooklyn 99 a chance when it first came out. My daughter later made me watch it with her. He was so unexpectedly good on that show. He was really the heart around which it revolved. Will be missed

@TheFrenchGhosty @bgtlover Sure I don't care about American prudeness, most of them would faint the second they step into an Australian pub but you're right, there's a time and place
in reply to Brodie Robertson

@TheFrenchGhosty yeah, in my post I didn't say anything about allowing that stuff, in fact, I specifically stated the contrary. However, I tryed, perhaps unsuccessfully, to shift the topic for something more pleasent and funny, aka why doesn't more software have funny and inoffensive easter eggs and such surprises.

I often think of this 1987 paper:
“Homology” in Proteins and Nucleic Acids: A Terminology Muddle and a Way out of It.

“Homology” has the precise meaning in biology of “having
a common evolutionary origin,” but it also carries the loose
meaning of “possessing similarity or being matched.” Its
rampant use in the loose sense is clogging the literature
on protein and nucleic acid sequence comparisons with
muddy writing and, in some cases, muddy thinking.

Threads is officially starting to test ActivityPub integration theverge.com/2023/12/13/240001…

Advocates for #ActivityPub - IF YOU HAVE A #WORDPRESS SITE, have you installed the ActivityPub plugin? wordpress.org/plugins/activity…

At the State of the Word address this week, Matt Mullenweg was asked about support for the plugin, and he commented that less than 5,000 sites had installed it. So he wasn't sure how interested people are in it.

So... if you have a WP site, let's start installing that plugin and making more sites available via ActivityPub! 😀

A 2023 survey by the Pew Research Center found that 65% of Americans “always or often feel exhausted when thinking about politics.” 63% have low or no confidence in the future of the U.S. political system. And 86% believe “Republicans & Democrats are more focused on fighting each other than on solving problems.”

But are the people within the U.S. government really that bad?
sheril.substack.com/p/the-terr… #politics #blog #news

in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

An important question is whether those 105 of grandstanders force undesired outcomes à la Pareto principle (80/20 rule). That may be a corollary.
in reply to Sheril Kirshenbaum

“fighting each other” that’s not an accurate description of what is going on in DC. One group is attempting to hold actual criminal activity hearings and trials to combat corruption the other is trying to manufacture an impeachment.

Haven't been in functional genomics in a while now but I really appreciate this comment: now that we can compare protein structures, do we even need protein BLAST?

nature.com/articles/s41467-023…

Very cool example of a few proteins that in BLAST-'space' don't look alike at all, but their AlphaFold structures align well suggesting they're distant homologues

(then again, might just be that AlphaFold is being overconfident based on the known sequences, who knows what the real structure is like....)

in reply to Philipp Bayer

this has been a real game changer for virus discovery - capsids often have no blast hits, but will have easily identifiable structures

Two weeks ago, I encountered a hilarious bug with the multiple sequence alignment program MAFFT.

Who would have thought that MAFFT calls #awk to parse one of its command line arguments. Now on some systems (including Ubuntu desktop versions before this year) awk is not gawk, but an alias for mawk instead (superuser.com/questions/75875/…) and with that one MAFFT would simply ignore the passed value for --ep.
This is now fixed in the #Bioconda package of MAFFT by requiring gawk explicitly.

Golf With Your Friends is fun. It's an excellent multiplayer game.

It runs so much better via Proton than the native port though.

(It's an old Unity game. In the native port: Mouse clicks don't register properly, changing settings is super buggy, and performance is absolute trash. Running the Windows version in Proton is flawless.)

Distract and confuse them with a passionate video extolling the virtues of WordPerfect for DOS and why it was peak distraction-free word-processing.

Bonus points for mentioning the calming white-on-blue and how its superior performance was due to versions programmed directly in assembly language prior to their WYSIWYG releases.
