We are about to have the longest night of the year in Australia. We don't get so much of the snow that people in the North get during their winters, but we have been experiencing sub-zero weather here in Hurstbridge VIC Australia. I'm having a hard time functioning BUT it's all more light from here on in! WOOHOO!
in reply to Muse

About two years ago I went to a presentation here in Santa Cruz by the daughter of Drake of the Drake Equation and the near head of NASA's (I could see him in the background in the control center when the JWST was launched.)

Anyway, they were describing how the coefficients of the Drake equation have increased because of the recognition that there are more planetary systems than originally thought and that the moons in those systems may be better places for life to form or exist than the planets themselves.

(BTW, I only belatedly realized that back in the 1970s that I worked at SDC for the person who headed the Apollo moon program. He thought I was a troublemaker. 😉

i keep them for hauling shopping (the smaller ones are soaked to a pulp and made into art paper). One box (pink-striped) drew comment from a cashier "ooh you have a lovely box!" at which i blushed and giggled "Yes i do". The floosy has commented on my box ever since ;)
in reply to Muse

CBC Radio has a national call--in radio program and the topic one Sunday was "what do you collect?" A art professor from the college I was intending got on the show. She collected boxes, she said. "What do you put in them?: "Nothing. I just like boxes."

@fahrni I think you pay to be a member of and upload to Glass. I don't have an account and I can navigate to your Glass profile and browse all the photos without paying anything.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

yes, when the profile is set to public, everyone can browse it. For uploading and stuff you need an account. It would be really great for following Glass profiles via Mastodon. Or depending on how open Glass may consider to be, even commenting.

Edit: I just saw there is a free option where you can follow three people

been saying this for a while, it's not that Reddit and Discord don't have their place, but they are tools for other things. There is no good replacement for good old forums, indexable that you can search for a solution for a problem someone solved 10y ago

Been shouting from the rooftops for ages for game devs especially to stop posting only in their discord

@gamingonlinux I wonder if the million dollar idea is to make a reporter that post not only to discord, but to your moderated forums.

Btw is neogaf still a thing. I'm so out of the loop with that lol

Cli-fi and the importance of representing full pictures

enter image description here

This Christmas an in-law kindly gave me a gift box of two pretty mugs and a variety of teas. It is completely true that I love tea, and I even collect teacups upon occasion. However, my tea cupboard is bursting with teas I will never have a chance to drink before I have to throw them out. I also have many more mugs than I ever use. Time to quietly re-gift.

My myotherapist is a lovely woman from Britain who married an Australian. She is currently on maternity leave. On her last day of work in January I brought the box to give to her. When she opened the package up, she actually started to cry. She told me that this Christmas people gave her husband things like an expensive cooking knife set. Not one of her gifts was for her, but for the baby to come. Mine was the first gift meant for her alone.

This article about maternal cli-fi is genuinely important.

in reply to Muse

@Jodi K To me the fact that we call giving birth, "going into labor", that's all we need to know to require governments to give women fair wages for the work they are doing just as mothers. Mothers are the best case and reason for having a universal guaranteed living wage (UBI/GLI). Women are human beings, not baby making machines.

App makers, stop doing this. If your app has a calendar in it, don't make Monday the start of the week. The microsecond of time saved by having the first day of the work week a little closer is not worth the confusion caused by this.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron

Interesting, I didn't know that varied between countries.

I live in the United States, and this is unusual here. Our week runs Sunday - Saturday here, so it is confusing to see it this way.

This almost caused me to schedule an event on the wrong day.
