+1 reason why you must stop using Chrome and, if possible, Chromium browsers

(Upd: link to a post in Fediverse with tech details fedi.simonwillison.net/@simon/…)

(Upd 2: MS Edge seems to have this issue; #Vivaldi also has it but it can be disabled; Ungoogled Chromium doesn't have it at all)

It turns out Google Chrome ships a default, hidden extension that allows code on `*.google.com` access to private APIs, including your current CPU usage

You can test it out by pasting the following into your Chrome DevTools console on any Google page:

chrome.runtime.sendMessage(
"nkeimhogjdpnpccoofpliimaahmaaome",
{ method: "cpu.getInfo" },
(response) => {
console.log(JSON.stringify(response, null, 2));
},
);

yeah, no, nothing, you cant say 8gb of ram with 8gb of swap is "16gb of ram", thats obvious misinformation and false/misleading advertising.

The curse of moving to Australia with a US accent: all the people who will lecture at you about US politics! I remember when another US immigrant friend was with me as somebody decided to tell us how the US works. She rolled her eyes. I started to laugh. The fellow looked a little cross, but was undeterred! (catch a hint)
in reply to Muse

"I am not so sure that Australians understand their own politics all that well." Like many places, we do indeed have people here with that problem.

in reply to Brodie Robertson

>GNU's importance is lowered to merely be the "GNU tooling", which is only one part of GNU and then only later raised.
Hurd development started early 1991 once the licensing issues with Mach were resolved - so I don't see where he got "years" from.
>Mentions that there could have been all pure 100% GNU/Freedom if Linux didn't exist, but calls that "FOSS".
Nothing from MINIX was actually used in the kernel, Linux - I don't even think it even had an influence on its design - Linus happen to have used MINIX until he got sick of its design and decided to start writing his own OS, but only ever ended up writing the kernel.
>We haven't seen any major ME vulnerabilities
Aside from all the major ones intel has succeeded in covering up.
in reply to GNU/翠星石

@Suiseiseki HURD development got started in 1986 but Stallman didn't want to base it off of BSD so that got scrapped to build off of Mach instead

I shall put this here to watch later!

Interesting that Mastodon itself combines a myriad of different social networks into one app. In a non-federated world, mastodon.social and vivaldi.net would be completely separate social networks; more so for Flipboard, Ghost, Pixelfed and so on. And yet you get all of them in your home feed on Mastodon.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron
More accurately, thanks to federation, the posts from not one but myriad social networks float by unnoticed in your feed unless you’re online watching like a hawk 24/7 😉
in reply to Brian Dear

@brianstorms The home feed algorithm is a choice of Mastodon, not the federated protocol underlying it. Threads has an algorithmic timeline and its part of this network. There are also apps that address this on the client-side, for example @phanpy has a unique catch-up feed.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@Gargron unfortunately, there are other protocols out there trying to do the same
in reply to Eugen Rochko

I appreciate you & Mastodon, Eugen. I especially like the diversity... in clients, configurations & people. Let the fingerwaggers go post on the social networks they built with 20M users.

Oh, wait a minute.

Más idénticas no significa más iguales

reflexión sobre cómo en la actualidad las redes sociales nos presentan imágenes de mujeres muy parecidas entre sí, eliminando una característica fundamental de la humanidad que es la diversidad.

Ammo vending machines installed in Oklahoma and Alabama grocery stores

"The machines, created by American Rounds, offer ammo to be purchased without engaging with a store clerk. They “are accessible 24/7, ensuring that you can buy ammunition on your own schedule, free from the constraints of store hours and long lines,” according to the company’s website. The company states that the machines are equipped with “the latest AI technology” with card-scanning and facial-recognition software to verify the identity and age of each buyer. "

Has the version on Steam been reclaimed by the original maintainers? I remember a while ago it was not recommended to download it because it was published by an unaffiliated party, has the situation changed or is it still better to just download it through the official site?

As @mmasnick points out, so-called "age verification" laws to participate in online activities amount to creating a license to read, and to speak. Anonymity would effectively be banned.

It's also a license for other people to know, in a granular way, what you are reading and saying -- and your personal information would be held by people who cannot be trusted in any way.

techdirt.com/2024/07/08/didnt-…

Maybe the worst part of this is that some alleged liberals are all in for this evil plan.

This is from an article about Hurstbridge in The Age newspaper. It's behind a paywall, but the article isn't really much to read. HOWEVER, the headline has me laughing.

Well, a more direct way to fix the USPS would be to keelhaul DeJoy.
