@Christoph S

For the month of October, let’s celebrate our #catsincostume and #blackcats in this thread! I’ll start with one of Pixel in a Chinese New Year lion dance costume. As you can observe, we never put her in a costume again.

Super grateful for all those who made a beautiful NYC launch event for Beautiful Solutions tonight at the Francis Kite Club!

@Girl Of The Sea Don't worry about liking Good Omens. I do like Terry Pratchett, but couldn't find myself liking Neil Gaiman's storytelling so much. On the otherhand, Michael Sheen and David Tennant in Staged are an absolute hoot! It was a relief watching them during the lockdown.

@Muse Hello, Miss Muse. As with liver, I don't worry in the least about not liking Good Omens. 😉 But thank you for your gentle kindness.

Somehow I missed when this video was published last year.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is such an important and inspiring document! Now more than ever we need to consider its contents. It is a slim document that lends itself well to being a small pamphlet, but its words are TREMENDOUS.

Immigrants provide a net benefit, though. On average they contribute more to their new home than they take. Reducing or eliminating immigration is harmful to the economy. The idea of people having "their" resources and "their" space is fundamentally about racism, especially since in most cases these are resources and spaces stolen from the original inhabitants and also not available equally to all.
in reply to Muse

@Andrew Pam Yes, I agree 100%, Andrew. For the most part, immigrants have built America. I've seen that fact right before my eyes for years. Immigrants did even more of the work after slavery was abolished. They are are the new Slaves.
I'm Pro-Immigration. I'm surrounded by people who hate the very people who are building their homes planting, growing and providing their food for them. It's a horrible situation for immigrants who have escaped terrible situations in their countries. They struggle just to keep themselves and their children alive.
I'm living on stolen Ute Indian land in Salt Lake City.

The Brooklyn gallery show I'm in got some media coverage, and they even featured my piece in a photo and at the end of the video!

"Another installation that leaned into the more spiritual aspect of water is 'Water the Sounds' by Ranjit Bhatnagar and Anne Hollænder. The piece lets spectators pour seawater into a bowl, which activates analog instruments as well as haunting audio of Hollænder's singing…"

As a 20-year user of #ubuntu I find concerning that the page celebrating the 20 years of the OS is full of references to LinkedIn and twitter: what a disconnect between Ubuntu the company and ubuntu the enthusiast user base. The page, the celebration itself even, is then not for non-paying users but for the enterprise-level users that pay. Makes sense, of course – a company needs to pay its bills –, but it is nonetheless an upsetting reminder.

While sending dozens upon dozens of bug reports over the years surely doesn't pay the bills, it is also free labour ubuntu got from me. Fair deal, though: I got a free, stable OS out of it, for 20 years, for all our servers, desktops and laptops.

And the "ISV" acronym (independent software vendor) finally explains why the rise of the snap packages, which as a user I don't want anything to do with – they have consistently brought trouble. Only makes sense, again, from the perspective of an enterprise with bills to pay.

Infants have impressive #auditory learning capabilities, even at day 1. Study shows that #newborns & 6–mo-olds already learn & detect #grammar-like rules; the underlying #BrainNetworks reorganize to be more adult-like after the first half-year #PLOSBiology plos.io/3UiaGMg
in reply to PLOS Biology

Interesting that this study on infant brain development is not done with fMRI but with fNIRS (functional near-infrared spectroscopy [1]). And concerning to read about the complete reliance on software provided opaquely by a company for the analysis: "As all fNIRS data preprocessing was carried out on MATLAB-based toolboxes, no custom scripts are available."

[1] fNIRS measures more or less the same as fMRI: blood flow. "Using fNIRS, brain activity is measured by using near-infrared light to estimate cortical hemodynamic activity which occur in response to neural activity." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Function…

#neuroscience

in reply to Albert Cardona

Why is it concerning that the analysis relies entirely on Matlab toolboxes?

1. Reproducing the analysis requires access to the exact toolbox with the exact version number. May also have platform dependencies (e.g., outputs slightly different results on macos, linux, and windows).
2. Often the version of the toolbox is not reported. It isn't in this paper.
3. Increased use of the toolbox may lead to price gouging, excluding many who can't afford to purchase it. Besides the unfairness, this impacts the ability of just about anyone to reproduce the analysis from the raw data.
4. After some years the toolbox may not be available at all, for example if the company considers its maintenance a burden with negative returns on investment.

If you are a reviewer or an editor: at the very least demand the reporting of the toolbox version and the operating system version where it was run. And ideally demand enough specification of the algorithms used by the functions provided in the toolbox that an independent reimplementation and reanalysis is possible.
