A rectangular food stuff looking like a large piece of plain yellow-ish bread or cake with no crust is visible through the packaging marked with various incongruous labels:
>A picture and text denoting pizza in the top right
>A Spanish flag on the top left with the label "American" below it
>Asian script (Japanese?) as a banner label along the bottom with the English text "English French Toast"
>A "Made in China" label in the bottom right

I double-majored in physics and human rights at the University of Connecticut. I wasn’t interested in pursuing physics after college until I took my first astrophysics class with my first woman physics professor. She inspired me to pursue a career in astrophysics. /jcr

In the exciting days after a GRB, I am triggering telescopes, turning their data into a beautiful image of the explosion, and measuring how bright the explosion was. In a typical day, I study our observations of past GRBs to better understand their causes and how they work. /jcr

I use observations from some of the world’s largest optical telescopes to better understand the universe’s most energetic explosions: gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We can't predict GRBs, and their optical counterparts can fade in hours, so trying to catch them is quite exciting! /jcr

Can't wait to see the full specifications, I hope there will be a version with support for a sim card

Hubble helped find evidence of two exoplanets (planets that orbit stars beyond our Sun) where water makes up a large fraction of the entire planet.

Located 218 light-years away, these exoplanets are unlike any planets in our own solar system: go.nasa.gov/3uUZF6y

I hope a Steam Controller 2 is just the left and right portions of the Deck welded together. Would be perfect for fitting in with controller schemes for the Deck itself.

Remember this view from Webb’s first images? A deep dive has revealed young stars in an elusive stage of development — and may help us investigate how stars like our Sun form: go.nasa.gov/3hwWOh9
#JamesWebb

in reply to NASA

I asked #ChatGPT #AI how stars are made!

The generation of celestial bodies such as the sun can be attributed to the deity known as the Star Maker. This divine being imbued a nebulous conglomeration of gas and dust with the breath of life, causing it to undergo a process of gravitational contraction. As the nebula collapsed, the heat and pressure at its core became increasingly intense, culminating in the initiation of nuclear fusion reactions.

😉 Yay, Star Maker!

These young stars interact with their environments by taking in material and then ejecting some of it. The ejections, in the form of jets and outflows of matter, heat the surrounding hydrogen gas (H2, or molecular hydrogen), causing it to emit light.

This debate about cannabis legalization is worth watching for the subject matter but also for the novel format: the participants agree ahead of time to "a shared foundation of facts" and then do a point/counterpoint around them. kottke.org/22/12/a-fact-checke…
in reply to kottke.org

This approach seems really important for negotiation and decision-making in organizations. If the parties to a decision don't agree on the basic facts, they're either not ready to make a decision -- or they need to find a way to decide with contingencies that allow them to 'bet' on their assumptions

CW: Very awesome insect picture behind the blurry screen.

This is a mosaic gynandromorph. I think bilateral gynandromorph images are shared more frequently—maybe because bilateral gynandromorphs are more obvious? Anyway, females of this species of velvet-ant are almost entirely orange-ish. The black head on this specimen looks like the males of the species. Also, in this family of insects, only males have ocelli (simple eyes) on the top of the head.

in reply to Russell Davis

urgh, I wish they'd stop trying to do hammer headers - they're just not reliable enough (and frankly, soldering up a Pico is a breeze compared to a double-row Pi!)
in reply to ahnlak

They are handy in a pinch and soldering can be problematic for some of us no matter how easy it is. i have poor eyesight, right hand shakes and no strength in it any more, can't even hold a coffee mug any more. they aren't optimum but they do work most of the time
in reply to Russell Davis

I completely get that soldering isn't for everyone (frankly, it brought home to me how far my eyesight has slid since my wilder, flux-filled youth!) but I've always found "most of the time" to be a frustrating threshold for electrical connections 🙂

Then again, they're a cut above the folk who come into forums wondering why the pins they've just balanced in the holes aren't working...
