A cosmic treasure trove! 🤩

This #HubbleFriday contains lots of astronomical marvels: the hazy galaxy UGC 7983, more distant galaxies, and even an asteroid, seen as four streaks of light on the upper left (from four exposures taken by Hubble).

A minor release of the desktop client is available for update - time to get those bug fixes!

See more on our forums, grab the new version on our install page or let the built in updater do its thing.

First time since the big date-bug, that I installed the update 3.6.5 without checking the forum and so I have to notice the translation-bug. Fortunately a small bug.
Nevertheless, thanks for your work!

Light pollution is getting worse. From a paper in Science: "The average night sky got brighter by 9.6% per year from 2011 to 2022, which is equivalent to doubling the sky brightness every 8 years." Almost 10% a year! science.org/doi/10.1126/scienc…
in reply to kottke.org

Soon the night sky will be so bright we won't need to turn on any lights.
in reply to kottke.org

so I'm not imagining it... We used to regularly see mag 6 stars on clear nights (e.g. all of the little dipper) but now that's pretty rare. No new develpment near me but I think the city on the other side of the mountains has gotten brighter. Or maybe more gunk in the air reflecting it

Hmmm couple of questions first, do you have more than 20 sub channels? do your mods bother people if they even slightly mention something that has a sub channel? do you have weird rules about not even being able to mention the existence of other similarly related content? do you or mods @ everyone a lot instead of letting the users just naturally find the information?

Just checking the toxicity level first as the above is a rampant problem in discords

Today’s spacewalk officially began at 8:14am ET. Mann and Wakata will spend about six-and-a-half hours installing modification kits for future solar array installation. Read more.. go.nasa.gov/3XrVADJ

I'm on openSUSE Tumbleweed, using kernel 6.16 and the new NVIDIA driver completely broke X11. I was able to fix it by removing the NVIDIA drivers, rebooting, reinstalling them and then rebooting again, in case someone else has the same issue. bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug…

Marianne North traveled to 6 continents & 17 countries, painting exotic plants in remote & hazardous jungles… all while traveling alone in Victorian dress in the 1800s.

North depicted over 1,000 scientifically accurate pitcher plants, orchids, ferns & more. Her oil paintings introduced botanists to multiple previously unidentified species & several are named after her.

Her art has its own gallery at Kew Royal Botanical Gardens. artsandculture.google.com/stor… #HistoryRemix #history #art #science

AND she did all that while suffering from quite severe mental health issues.

She couldn't paint animals for toffee, but her flowers are exquisite and that gallery is mind blowing 😀

The picture of her in Ceylon — the modern-day Sri Lanka — made me curious to read more about her; because, I'm from the same place. 😊

Twitter quietly changed its Developer Agreement today to retroactively justify their unannounced ban on third-party Twitter clients. They added a single line forbidding "use or access the Licensed Materials to create or attempt to create a substitute or similar service or product to the Twitter Applications." Here's a diff between the two. diffchecker.com/DmAjUJGK/

What are your favorite #fonts for #chemists? The announcement from the U.S. State Department (which is switching from Times New Roman to Calibri) got me thinking about accessibility. I avoid sans serif fonts in printed documents because it's hard to tell apart lower case "L" and upper case "i". (I had to write them backwards here to make it clear!) When I see Cl2, I know it's chlorine, but chemistry learners might read it as chlorine diiodide. 🧵 nytimes.com/2023/01/19/us/poli…

I've said this before. Each time I see a pic like this. I wished humanity could teach wildlife to shoot back at jerks like the ones aiming to slaughter this beautiful animal. In this case could the rhino at least gore the shooter?

@jaranta I thought the reason for this decision was pressure from the DnD community (esp those who currently create content under the OLS). Was there a specific legal ruling or perhaps we can infer that once lawyers were consulted it clarified something legally?

re: Dungeons and Dragons mechanics will be licensed CC-BY 4.0
@kensanata Hmm thanks for sharing. I guess as with many things it's hard to say there is a definitive conclusion to some event one overhears from the news. For those who have products carrying the OGL, it does seem to me like their struggle is not over with WOTC. I'm not in this group but I've certainly appreciated having my horizons expanded when considering issues of copyright in game publishing.

De deux pierres tombées du Ciel prés de Vérone, diverses opinions là-dessous.
