Wonderful essay by @vincentflora and Assaf Vardi on viruses in the ocean

Viral infection in the ocean—A journey across scales

"Aquatic virology tackles some of the most challenging questions in microbial ecology and oceanography, trying to understand how microorganisms that are invisible to the naked eye can influence large-scale processes, such as biogeochemical cycles, or affect entire marine food webs."

With @sushant, we've been loading all 50 state regulations into an open source code management system called Indigo. Think of this as middleware: it has an API that we will then use to push html, pdfs, Akoma-Ntoso xml, etc downstream to a user-facing site. codes.resource.org/ You're welcome to look around. It's a bit obtuse, but it has some nice data management capabilities, including redlines, defined terms, etc. We've loaded 2 quarters of regs for all 50 states.

Isolation and infection cycle of a polinton-like virus virophage in an abundant marine alga

This is an important study that shows how #virophage have evolved multiple times independently in distinct viral groups. Turns out that #viruses infecting other viruses are quite common!

Also gotta love the opening sentence: "Eukaryotic genomes are a hub where viruses and selfish genetic elements convene" - so true.

Amazing work by the @BejaLab lab!

Nazis are literally banned in Germany so I'd been wondering how Twitter 2.0's strategy of unbanning the Nazis as a growth hack would play there.

It turns out it doesn't and the company just got hit with its first lawsuit for not enforcing German laws.

Viruses are the most abundant biological entity in the #ocean. In this #PLOSBiology Essay, @vincentflora @vardilab discuss interactions between hosts and #viruses in the ocean and their relevance for global ocean ecosystem function in a changing climate.

Nature is full of surprises. Meet Costasiella kuroshimae, an adorable species of sea slug known as “leaf sheep.”

At no more than 8mm, these tiny ocean critters graze on algae & keep chloroplasts in their bodies for up to 10 days. They supplement their diet through photosynthesis to create energy, which is why they’re sometimes referred to as “solar-powered sea slugs.” bbc.com/travel/article/2021032… #nature #science #SharedPlanet

Awesome.

Thanks! I sent an email to this address yesterday, but didn't hear back yet. I guess I won't hear back until the deadline is over, and it's okay. I tried my best to open the required ACM template with AbiWord and Word 6, and it doesn't look quite right, so I doubt my submission would've been accepted anyways. I don't know LaTeX, and I'm afraid to try it, because a full texlive install on my Debian would consume 75% of the free space on the partition...

I never liked the "real person" movies, I always prefered the comic ones!
in reply to Muse

@Christoph S Oh, I definitely love the animated ones. The live action Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra was the best of the "real person" movies. They are a bit up and down, but some are very funny.

BINGO!

@esmail Just so you know, Wikiless is looking weird after Wikipedia updated their interface, and somebody patched it:
github.com/Metastem/wikiless
in reply to Revvy 🇨🇦

yes after codeberg repo closed, I have no idea what to follow next. I even made a mirror of it's repo till codeberg release it back
in reply to Esmail EL BoB :dinosaur:

Apparently the repo was taken down because the Wikipedia logo is trademarked, so it's unlikely it will come back unless the developer removes it.

I know, thats why I made this: git.esmailelbob.xyz/esmail/wik…

but my question is, is there another "official" repo for new patches/updates

in reply to Revvy 🇨🇦

>repo gets taken down because the logo is trademarked

Why do people still use Github?

in reply to Revvy 🇨🇦

@MK2boogaloo Then, selfhost git over tor network so it will be harder to file copyright and ask your VPS to take your whole server down
in reply to Esmail EL BoB :dinosaur:

@MK2boogaloo I bought a crappy OpenBSD server with 1 shared vCPU, 512 MB RAM, 10 GB Storage and 500 GB of bandwidth and secured everything. I'm working on it.
in reply to Esmail EL BoB :dinosaur:

@MK2boogaloo I just realized: "Although Gitea is lighter than Gitlab, if you have a VPS with only 512MB of RAM"
in reply to Revvy 🇨🇦

@MK2boogaloo there are more lighter git apps github.com/awesome-selfhosted/…

FYI it's incredibly affordable. Free for low income people and $7/mo for everyone else. It's in about 25 states now and will be nationwide in the next 60-90 days.

I have long remembered the names Grissom, White and Chafee, the fateful crew of Apollo 1.

Space flight as with aviation learns from its mistakes. Had Apollo 1 not happened, and the lessons learned, there could have been a far more significant failure in flight.
