Today we have the one and only @Conan_Kudo on the show, if you've been at all involved in the development of Fedora Linux, OpenSUSE, CentOS and may more projects you've heard the name.

in reply to Brodie Robertson

Really wish there were more community members like @Conan_Kudo who care about the greater "Desktop Linux" as a whole, not just about one particular distribution. And actually do things on a volunteer basis. Appreciate his work bridging communities, e.g., his work to bring Snap to Fedora. Sounds like an uphill battle though?
in reply to probono

Regarding #Wayland, @Conan_Kudo nails it with "total protocol breakage and everything being completely different". And interesting to hear that @BrodieOnLinux is not using #Wayland due to "issues". "There are issues with Nvidia, absolutely. There are issues with window-manager-y things." So basically we all agree!
in reply to probono

he's not using wayland because his issues where hyperland specific and Sway's got some missing features he likes.
in reply to Joshua Lee

@10leej @probono Right, I'm aware of the philosophy that wlroots (and xdg-desktop-portal-wlr) holds, and it is unlikely that x-d-p-wlr will gain complete portal services coverage because of it.
in reply to Neal Gompa (ニール・ゴンパ)

@10leej @probono The specific thing that I was missing is window capture, which I'm pretty sure is available for GNOME and KDE, but Wlroots not so much. Hyprland with it's custom portal was the only way to make it happen on that side
in reply to Brodie Robertson

@10leej @probono It won't get implemented in xdg-desktop-portal-wlr until this is resolved: gitlab.freedesktop.org/wlroots…

wlroots has some *interesting* constraints that prevent it from using the solution everyone else uses, notably that Sway wants everything going through Wayland IPC rather than reusing other stuff when available.

in reply to Brodie Robertson

I appreciate the meme of Brodie bumping into yet another thing that Neal had a hand in lol

So here's what Unity says the new pricing policy is, today (assuming it doesn't change again next week, like it did last week, and the week before).

blog.unity.com/news/open-lette…

Critical thoughts:

1. The fact that the new fees *only apply to 2024.1 and later* is the critical change here, and probably(?) avoids a lawsuit. This *will* have interesting ecosystem effects since many people will now want to stick on 2023.4 indefinitely. Possibly, libraries will latch to 2023.4 and never update.

We found some bugs (much to our surprise), so we fixed them.

Several hooks were added to customise EasyBuild, incl. one to tweak shell commands being run (see also docs.easybuild.io/hooks).

I honestly wonder how this will affect digital marketplace sellers and avatars in something like VRChat. Would the 2.5% revenue share be passed along to the seller/creator of the asset?

Microsoft - keep your filthy hands off Valve, leak shows MSFT would buy Valve gamingonlinux.com/2023/09/micr…

#Valve #Microsoft

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

The only way Valve would accept this is if GabeN gets to be the new owner(and I don't mean just CEO, but sole/majority shareholder of the company). Otherwise, fat chance of it ever happening.
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

Microsoft it's already bad enough, we don't need them buying Valve, they can suck a lemon.

This fundraiser is from a year ago and I have only just tried getting past the halfway mark since my last job ended.

Looking to raise $4000 to give to my landlord. Hoping to be back to work within the next month.

Legally, my landlord cannot demand rent on a building that is in violation of its certificate of occupancy. Legally, they can still evict tenants.

While I am disgusted by this imbalance of power, I want to have a home. I don't want to move again. This would be 40+ in the move count for me, and somewhere in the teens for my preteen kid.

Please share wherever you feel comfortable sharing. Group chats, FB, WhatsApp, Threads, the bird app, anything!

So when I'm not struggling to stay alive and housed, I am a cooperative founder (can't do much without income) and I've created a video shorts series around cooperative housing in Black American History.

Enjoy.

While I don't believe Microsoft's monopoly is a good thing, the part about porting the games OSes other than Windows sure is interesting
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

for Blizzard, any change is a good change. I'd rather have Microsoft do to WoW what they did to Minecraft than let Blizzard and especially Danuser do to WoW what they're doing. I'd even rather they just shut down every WoW server and create a new game altogether.
