Parents, PLEASE check your kids’ Halloween candy this year!!!! I just found atoms in this candy bar that were formed during BIG BANG NUCLEOSYNTHESIS, and many more that were the result of earlier generations of stars exploding as POWERFUL SUPERNOVA.

Just terrifying.

Michael Eisen has been fired for
praising "one of The Onion’s fake news stories on [Xitter]. The story bore the headline “Dying Gazans Criticized For Not Using Last Words To Condemn Hamas.” Eisen said “The Onion speaks with more courage, insight and moral clarity than the leaders of every academic institution put together. I wish there were a @TheOnion university.”

I agree with the caveat about Arch that Manjaro makes the AUR way too visible to beginner users, Gentoo technically has easy distros based on it but no one actually uses them so it's a non issue
in reply to Brodie Robertson

@Nici That being said, the AUR package I think should still be maintained, even if there is a note when installing it like "this package is not official, for advanced users only". There is some value for a native package at the moment. I'm not saying that I disagree with Fedora not having the package (they shouldn't), but Manjaro is not really Arch. It's like what Ubuntu is to Debian. That is, it uses pacman, but the repos are different.

Steam Deck - METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol.1....oh dear

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

the irony of it is that with emulators on the SteamDeck it works perfectly. These companies really ask us to keep pirati... I mean emulating.
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

I had my expectations set really low for the ports in the first place, and the bare minimum ports don't bother me as long as the games function on modern platforms. Liam, MGS3 is one of the greatest games ever made, and once this collection works on Proton, you should absolutely give it a play.

At Nextcloud, push notifications are designed to protect users and their data.

Plus, they're speedy, convenient and secure!

Learn how they work in our blog!

in reply to Nextcloud 📱☁️💻

So instead of supporting push notifications without google play (like @element and Conversations have been doing for years), Nextcloud both requires users to have Google Play Services installed and also runs its own centralized notifications gateway for all Nextcloud instances to use, and both are required.

If you've ever wondered why VPN marketting works so well
in reply to Brodie Robertson

@tomscott EXACTLY!

I also think that #VPN providers should be required to disclose what their actual product is and that they can't and won't protect someone from the foreseeable consequences if they were to abuse their tech...

The only "legitimate purpose" they actually do I've seen is circumvention of #Geoblocking.

Anything else is either #FUD or just made-up lies and people would he better off using @torproject #TorBrowser instead.

Everyone loves the spanking "new" Thorium Browser, but here's what isn't said in reviews:

1. Uses Chromium 117 (118 is the current). It's behind on security updates.
2. Still includes un-proxied Google pings, so allows Google to track you.
3. The supposed "fastest browser on Earth" also maintains a Firefox fork called Mercury, which claims to do the same things in Firefox, but Phoronix has showed this isn't the case. phoronix.com/review/mercury-fi…
4. One man operation; you must trust Alex in addition to trusting Mozilla. Make of that what you will.

I'm going to pass (for now). I await the squabbling that occurs every time people talk about browsers.

in reply to Trafotin

It could be great but it really needs to prove itself long term before it's worth recommending

Persian mathematician Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī was born ~780. He not only revolutionized algebra, but his contributions in mathematics, astronomy & geography have been central to hundreds of years of scientific advances.

Known as the father of algebra, al-Khwārizmī became one of the most influential thinkers of all time. The terms algebra & algorithm are derived from his name & work. loc.gov/item/2021666184/ #HistoryRemix #history #science #math

This, and also E-mail protocols are clear indication that the world of computing was far less hostile in 1970s and 1980s was BY FAR less hostile and so - not much thought was spent on security.

I've been using Mimestream as my MacOS email client for less than a day and it's already so much better than the increasingly janky Gmail web interface. What's your email setup these days? mimestream.com/
in reply to kottke.org

For my personal stuff: Mimestream for Mac, Mail.app on iOS.

Outlook for work (which is actually pretty decent, also nice to have the app separation when I don’t need to be in my work email)
