And tech bros are so fast to ascribe sapience to their AI creations, yet are unwilling to extend empathy to living biological beings. Thomas Huxley has a lot to answer for when he described animals as unfeeling machines. However, all of colonialism, industrialisation, and social hierarchy have a lot to answer for. All of them ascribe true humanity only to powerful white men. Everyone else are things to own and to use.

The basic mechanisms are similar with a 'tree'. It seems that if there is a brain, then there is 'personality' at some level. How that personality manifests itself to humans determines how humans interact with that thing.
And of course, there are lots of human 'personalities' too.
