Pro-Israel PACs Are Subverting Open Debate and Free Elections

commondreams.org/views/2022/08…

Fearful that Israel is losing support among Democrats, especially progressive Democrats, elements of the pro-Israel community have developed a number of "dark money" entities with the express purpose of defeating "progressive Democrats."

Why are US War Criminals Immune from Prosecution?

commondreams.org/views/2022/08…

in reply to tom grzyb

The ICC’s most serious problem, however, is that 70 nations, including the world’s major military powers, have refused to become parties to the treaty. The governments of China, India, and Saudi Arabia never signed the Rome Statute. Although the governments of the United States, Russia, and Israel did sign it, they never ratified it. Subsequently, in fact, they withdrew their signatures.

There is no dark side of the moon, really.

in reply to tom grzyb

Even as he signed the treaty, President Bill Clinton cited “concerns about significant flaws” in it, notably the inability to “protect US officials from unfounded charges.” Thus, he did not submit the treaty to the Senate for ratification and recommended that his successor, George W. Bush, continue this policy “until our fundamental concerns are satisfied.” Bush, in turn, “unsigned” the treaty in 2002, pressured other governments into bilateral agreements that required them to refuse surrender of U.S. nationals to the ICC, and signed the American Servicemembers Protection Act (sometimes called the “Hague Invasion Act”) which authorized the use of military force to liberate any American being held by the ICC.

Talk about your Evil Empire...

Sinema Received Over $500K From Private Equity Before Shielding That Industry From Tax Hikes

commondreams.org/news/2022/08/…

"Remember the days when taking half a million bucks from an industry, and then passing legislation that only benefits that industry, while passing the costs onto everyone else, would be called corruption?" asked one critic. "Today it's just lobbying as usual."

in reply to tom grzyb

The securities and investment sector as a whole has donated more than $2.2 million to Sinema since she was elected in 2017, according to OpenSecrets. Former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich quipped last week, amid reports of Sinema's plans to undermine her party's efforts to hike taxes on corporations and the wealthy, that Wall Street is "getting a huge return on their investment."

No joke. Not unless monkey business is funny.

I have done the experiment, and I, and I can only speak for myself, pronounce them exactly the same (well except for the added S on the front obviously). Both cause the same amount of air pressure on the P.

ABC is holding a vote for Australia's favourite tree! abc.net.au/news/science/2022-0…

It was a tough one for me but I ended up voting for:
- Moreton Bay Fig - not only are they glorious, I used to sit in one at lunchtimes in school with my friends
- Bunya pine - spectacular, local, and good food source
- Macadamia - same as the Bunya pine really!

High Level Michigan Republican under investigation for tampering with voting machines

cnn.com/2022/08/08/politics/ma…

the Michigan State Police and the attorney general's office have been investigating a series of voting machine breaches that took place in several counties around the state last year. According to the documents released Monday, that probe has led investigators to Kalamazoo-based lawyer Matthew DePerno

That's along with reason #1 - they must be doing this (even more-so than I am).

Open Source Seed Saving Workshop with Aimee Fenech

Saving seeds from the fruits of your current harvest for your plants in the next season is a thousands of years old key practice to grow plants and cultivate new breedings. Not to forget, it is actually the main technology that enabled humankind to finally stop nomadism and to settle down.

Still, many of us do not know how to save seeds and so we decided to offer an interactive online workshop presented by Aimee Fenech last year. This is the recording of our session back.

Thanks go out to Aimee for holding the session, to Björn for preparing the video and to the Center for the Cultivation of Technology for letting us record the session.

If you like the video/workshop, spread the word! Help others, saving their seeds!

Republicans block cap on insulin prices

nbcnews.com/politics/congress/…

Because, that is what Republicans Do.

in reply to tom grzyb

It’s only a good thing for Republicans when the money-makers make more money.
in reply to tom grzyb

... so, as a corollary, nothing else much matters, unless it gets in the way of the money makers making more money.

Once feared, illicit fentanyl is now a drug of choice for many opioid users

nbcnews.com/health/health-news…

Gee, and Purdue Pharma does not even make fentanyl...

in reply to tom grzyb

I've long felt that Purdue was being used as a scapegoat for the opioid epidemic. The thing is, there are myriad sources of supply, both semi-legal and out-right criminal.

Taylor Swift, Kylie Jenner and the very real climate consequences of private planes

nbcnews.com/think/opinion/tayl…

it’s the carbon hypocrites who really stand out, the people like Bill Gates who travel around the world speaking about climate change while racking up hundreds of thousands of air miles in their private jets.

in reply to tom grzyb

Jet-flight is extremely inefficient, and carbon-intensive, even when carrying dozens of people. One person and a small entourage? Planet Killers.
in reply to tom grzyb

even more damaging than the 3,300-plus billionaires, and relevant to the current backlash, are the high emissions from the more than 300,000 individuals classified by Wealth-X as “Ultra-High-Net-Worth” — each with more than $30 million in assets. This global elite is responsible for a major chunk of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions, more than what many sizable countries emit.

New project started yesterday. This will eventually be a slightly ornate house number panel to put in front of the new letterbox. #blacksmith #metalwork
in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

All the forging is done. Now I just need to paint it and it’ll be ready to install.

I opted to wire-wrap the curly bits on, could have used hot collars, but wire wrap is also ok.

#blacksmith #metalwork #decorative

in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

Painting had commenced. First a primer coat, then the black. I’ll finish with a clear coat for extra protection.
in reply to Kate

I noticed, too late that autocorrect struck on my post too. Had should be has.
in reply to David de Groot 𓆉

A quick test install of the finished product with the letterbox placed behind.

The letterbox is awaiting installation from the electrician that destroyed the last one (pending a slab).

in reply to tom grzyb

The major addition from the previous draft is an expansion on the notion of "property" which I had been entertaining and was inspired to elaborate from the work published by Marvin T. Brown in "The New Systems Reader". This notion may become central to the entire essay - I'm not quite sure yet - but it seems to be heading towards what I am most seeking here: the design of a sustainable mechanism. I will have to cite him in the work yet...
in reply to tom grzyb

I see some room for edits also - but that comes later. 😉
