Some of the lunar samples collected during #Apollo17 were stored for 50 years to preserve them for future generations. NASA’s Apollo Next Generation Sample Analysis initiative is studying Apollo samples using new tools that weren't available decades ago. go.nasa.gov/3BBAHgx

Whoever decided they should wait 50 years hit it spot on. Just about the time we're heading back to the moon.

Scientists found “buried treasure," and the Cosmic Cliffs marked the spot. 🏴‍☠️

Remember this view from Webb’s first images? A deep dive has revealed young stars in an elusive stage of development — and may help us investigate how stars like our Sun form: go.nasa.gov/3hwWOh9

in reply to NASA

I asked #ChatGPT #AI how stars are made!

The generation of celestial bodies such as the sun can be attributed to the deity known as the Star Maker. This divine being imbued a nebulous conglomeration of gas and dust with the breath of life, causing it to undergo a process of gravitational contraction. As the nebula collapsed, the heat and pressure at its core became increasingly intense, culminating in the initiation of nuclear fusion reactions.

😉 Yay, Star Maker!

These young stars interact with their environments by taking in material and then ejecting some of it. The ejections, in the form of jets and outflows of matter, heat the surrounding hydrogen gas (H2, or molecular hydrogen), causing it to emit light.

The even brown coating on the cooked version looks amazing. Did you glaze it in an oven?

This debate about cannabis legalization is worth watching for the subject matter but also for the novel format: the participants agree ahead of time to "a shared foundation of facts" and then do a point/counterpoint around them. kottke.org/22/12/a-fact-checke…
in reply to kottke.org

This approach seems really important for negotiation and decision-making in organizations. If the parties to a decision don't agree on the basic facts, they're either not ready to make a decision -- or they need to find a way to decide with contingencies that allow them to 'bet' on their assumptions

CW: Very awesome insect picture behind the blurry screen.

This is a mosaic gynandromorph. I think bilateral gynandromorph images are shared more frequently—maybe because bilateral gynandromorphs are more obvious? Anyway, females of this species of velvet-ant are almost entirely orange-ish. The black head on this specimen looks like the males of the species. Also, in this family of insects, only males have ocelli (simple eyes) on the top of the head.

in reply to Russell Davis

urgh, I wish they'd stop trying to do hammer headers - they're just not reliable enough (and frankly, soldering up a Pico is a breeze compared to a double-row Pi!)
in reply to ahnlak

They are handy in a pinch and soldering can be problematic for some of us no matter how easy it is. i have poor eyesight, right hand shakes and no strength in it any more, can't even hold a coffee mug any more. they aren't optimum but they do work most of the time
in reply to Russell Davis

I completely get that soldering isn't for everyone (frankly, it brought home to me how far my eyesight has slid since my wilder, flux-filled youth!) but I've always found "most of the time" to be a frustrating threshold for electrical connections 🙂

Then again, they're a cut above the folk who come into forums wondering why the pins they've just balanced in the holes aren't working...

it was soldering that finally prompted me to get reading glasses.

Turns out there are actual individual *pins* you can solder, not just a vaguely silvery blur...

Heading home from Old Faithful this afternoon we encountered a group of bison braving the 150F water while crossing the runoff of Excelsior Geyser. The cold air causes heavy steam to rise and surround the bison.

Juno's Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) imager obtained this infrared view of Io in July. Brighter spots indicate higher temperatures in this image of the moon's highly volcanic surface.

Juno captured this view of Jupiter's moon Europa in September. During the flyby, Juno’s Microwave Radiometer (MWR) provided a look beneath Europa's icy crust to obtain data on its structure and temperature down to as deep as about 15 miles (24 kilometers) below the surface.

I've started reading The Elements of Eloquence by Mark Forsyth. I'm already in love with this book. This line has totally sold it for me:

11/22/63 isn't horror. It's science fiction. Mr. King's work gets pigeonholed as horror when a sizable portion of it isn't. The Eyes of the Dragon is fantasy, for example (his daughter asked him to write a fantasy novel).

Modular Melody Maker 2 in/2 out Quantizer Demo

i wanted to have a good quality demo of the 2in/2 out quantizer progress for the modular melody maker aka not recorded with my phone. both ADC inputs are receiving a random waveform, the waveform is quantized and output through the DAC.

for the patch, braids is receiving one of the 1v/oct signals and is going into a VCA with a triangle wave CV signal. the output of the VCA is going into IN on rings. rings is getting the other 1v/oct signal along with a gate trigger on strum.
