Over the last 30 years, scientists have learned much about why we age. In an animated infographic for National Geographic, Jason Treat, Eve Conant, Kelsey Nowakowski and Markos Kay outline and explain the molecular processes involved in aging.

Evolution didn’t select for old age to be sickly. Instead, it kept us healthy — at a cost. In July, Steven Strogatz interviewed Judith Campisi about how cellular processes that are helpful when we’re young can turn on us and cause problems as we grow older.

😲 Two recent studies from China look at the truly wide diversity of RNA viruses found in ticks.

"Extensive diversity of RNA viruses in ticks revealed by metagenomics in northeastern China"

"Metavirome of 31 tick species provides a compendium of 1,801 RNA virus genomes"
nature.com/articles/s41564-022…

A lot of insights in these two studies, so I'll just point out a few things that I personally found interesting.

Somewhere around 235,000 orbits of the earth if it's doing 16 laps a day?

Wow, did it really travel >5B miles? It's crazy it's traveling distances comparable to voyagers just 'running laps around the house' instead of into the great unknown.

Whoa, furniture conservator Ben Bacon figured out that repeated marks in prehistoric cave drawings related to the life-cycles of the animals depicted. If true, this "proto-writing" would predate other examples by 10,000 years. (via @waxy) bbc.com/news/uk-england-641618…

Widening Highways Doesn't Fix Traffic. So Why Do We Keep Doing It? "If you reduce the price of a good then people will consume more of it. That's essentially what we're doing when we expand freeways." nytimes.com/2023/01/06/us/wide…

in reply to kottke.org

if the good in question was “food” and reducing the price meant that more people could to afford to eat enough to not starve to death, would it not be a stupid argument to complain that the grocery store was just as empty below the supply of food was increasing?

Because that’s what complaining about “Induced Demand” sounds like to me.

I collected this rock core back in Nov. 2021. Bringing samples from rocks like this back to Earth for closer study could be really revealing.🔬

Five down, five to go, as I lay down my backup set of 10 samples.

In this tube: a core sample from a rock that formed from magma, then was altered by water several times. It could help scientists understand the early history of this area, when life may have been present. 🔎🪨

Why put them down? The wind could bury them in sand by the time you go to pick them up. Wouldn’t they be easier to find if they’re in/on the rover?

An atmospheric river drenched California on Jan. 4 and 5, 2023. 🌧️
