New Mutations Identified in #BirdFlu #Virus
The virus, called #H5N1, has infected #cows in at least 36 #herds in nine states, raising fears that #milk could be infectious β€” concerns now largely put to rest β€” and highlighting the risk that many #viruses might jump across species on crowded #farms.
A #genetic analysis sheds light on when the #outbreak began, how the virus spread and where it may be going.

New studies have revealed that ancient viruses, which became a part of the DNA of jawed vertebrates, played a vital role in the development of myelin. Myelin allows for swift impulse conduction without the need to increase the diameter of nerve cells. This made it possible for nerves to be packed together more closely and grow longer, which was beneficial for both larger body sizes and more complex brains.

❓ How accurately can we predict diverse #bacteriophage bacteria-interactions from their #genomes only ?

🦠 We created a matrix of >38k #phage-#bacteria interactions to find out (=> AUROC 86%) & used our predictions to recommend tailored phage cocktails.

Predicting which phages infect which specific strains would allow to better fight bacterial infections and understand #microbial ecology.

A third of #US #deer have had #COVIDβ€”and they then infected humans at least 3 times. People in the US transmitted the pandemic #coronavirus to white-tailed deer at least 109 times! New study builds on data suggesting #whitetaileddeer could be a #virus reservoir. Researchers surveyed over 11,000 white-tailed deer from 26 states and DC. Of those, 31.6% had antibodies indicating a previous infection with #SARSCoV2, and 12.2% had detectable SARS-CoV-2 virus. https://arstechnica.com/health/2023/07/a-third-of-us-deer-have-had-covid-and-they-infected-humans-at-least-3-times/

How RNA viruses can use their dsRNA intermediate state as a de facto latent state, facilitating viral persistence.

Positive single-stranded #RNA viruses have a replication cycle that includes a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) intermediate state.

Holy Crap.

If confirmed, we'll have to figure out how to categorize 180,000 newly discovered viruses.

@RNA has called this the "Platinum Age of Virus Discovery"!

"Identification of #RNA viruses is currently limited to those with sequence similarity to a known #virus, such that... the 'dark matter' of the virosphere remains challenging to detect.

We developed a deep learning algorithm [which] integrates both sequence and structural information..."

Hmm...

A recent paper looked at evolution of #SARSCoV2 *within* different tissues, which might raise a few questions.

Specifically, the authors found evidence that the #virus might evolve independently in different tissues, especially in immune-privileged sites.

But that's not all...

Interesting report on #Mpox #virus:
(AKA #MonkeyPox or #MPXV)

"We monitored SARS-CoV-2 & MPXV genomes in the air... in Madrid nightclubs... in 2022.
...
MPXV in the air had increased considerably on Aug 8, with 57% of positive samples containing more than 100 genomes per [cubic meter]; this date coincided with the peak incidence of mpox in Spain."

The authors suggest that air sampling might be a useful surveillance method.

If you found the above ☝️ study eye-opening, consider that Deer Tick/Powassan Virus (POWV) may persist in the brain, as studied in this new paper:

😲 Specifically, the authors found that the #virus may persist in the brain without creating infectious particles, just as non-infectious measles can persist in the brain indefinitely β€” and be fatal:

Have you ever had a weak positive test for West Nile #virus only to test negative on a subsequent test?

One recurring problem with #epidemiology of #flavivirus #InfectiousDisease is that antibody tests for one flavivirus happen to be highly crossreactive with other flaviviruses.

Important to note that this study of whale circovirus only looked at beached whales.

πŸ‘€ Surprisingly, it found the virus in 50% of animals. 69% of those showed virus in the brain.

Whales are intelligent creatures and probably don't "accidentally" beach themselves on land. If they beach themselves on land, there may be a logical evolutionary explanation.

...Such as fulfilling the need to separate infected individuals from the rest of the group?

Tick Borne Encephalitis Virus (TBEV) is found in northern latitudes from England to Siberia, with variants across North America.

Daniel RΕ―ΕΎek's lab has been doing some great work studying this possibly common, but under-diagnosed, pathogen.

Their latest paper describes how they used a Leishmania expression system to produce TBEV virus-like particles (VLP).

When used as a vaccine, the VLPs provided full protection from lethal TBEV in mice.
